Flying Pig

Post by Kaiser Saucy »

Im thinking of staying at one of the flying pig hostels during my january trip, iwas just wondering if you had stayed in one of the Amsterdam hostels & what you thought of it...did you enjoy your stay/would you go back?

Also what would you say the pro's & cons of the uptown & downtown are? which one would you recommend?

I've stayed at both, and would again, but I think the age limit is 35. I forget which is uptown and which is downtown...but the one on Nieuwendijk is much handier for coffeeshops in the centre of town. It's a short walk from Centraal station. The one near Vondel park is nice in the summer and a bit less of a party spot. Unless you want to be away from the centre, it's not so great in winter. The staff can be great or very surly, the breakfast is better than you would expect and included. Don't expect luxury and take ear-plugs if you stay in a dorm. The Winston hotel on Warmoestraat is another good cheap choice, basic private rooms or dorms. Very cool hotel, I'm staying there again next week.

Age limits no problem im 26. I think i'll probably go for the one near centraal. Im not too bothered about noise in the dorm...there may be 4-6 of us so we'll get our own room. If i end up in the larger dorm it wont be too much of a hassle

1) I'll be quite wasted by the time i turn in
2) If i can sleep in a festival 100 yards from a 24hr soundsystem i can handle
a dorm...i'll be sure to pack the ear plugs though

I'll also go and take a look at the winston. My way of thinking is that the cheaper the accomadation the longer i can stay/more spending money i have

If i go abroad i go to see the sights, so i dont see the point in splashing the cash on a fancy hotel that i know im only gonna be in while im unconcious. As long as its clean...im happy

Flying Pig downtown is just one block off Damrak right near Centraal station. The Flying Pig "palace" or uptown one is located just near Vondelpark and is considered to be the more chill of the two. A friend of mine stayed at both and said he liked the Uptown one more because it was a lot more chill and quiet than the downtown one. Cheaper too.

Thanks for that

Ive decided that i would like to get over there before january now....ive just got to persuade my mate that we should head out on the 11th dec. The pigs could only cover the 1st & last day though.

Having a look around i found a place called the "stay ok" hostel which overlooks vondelpark...high ratings from its customers, clean, cheap even for a private room with a couple of people sharing.

Also looked at a place called Amsterdam Cribs, which do little flats between 3+ people for £20 each a night, pretty nice looking place, looks a better option than a hotel and cheaper.

choices, choices, i want to get there asap but im just gonna have to wait & see what my mate reckons.

I just got back from staying at the Winston again, both rooms and dorms, and I would say the Winston is WAY nicer. I'll post a pic of the dorm room later. They have wood laminate flooring which is much nicer than grubby carpet. Comfy beds even for a giant like me, and much quieter than the Pig. breakfast isn't as good as it used to be though, they now serve instant coffee!

Pig is better for partying, Winston for comfort and relaxation. Although the Winston has a club next door which was great on Saturday, we stayed until the lights came on at 4am.

cool, i'll look out for the pictures later.

I have kind of gone off the pig a little anyway. I do like the sound of the winston more. So it would be between there & one of the stayok's, cribs looks really nice but it will have to wait until i go over with a few mates.

hope you had a good trip :D

Yes great trip thanks KS, apart from a few minor disasters like missing my flight home. I've got more pics but no time, will try post more later, here's the 6 person dorm.

thats pretty decent, looks clean which is the main thing. And like you said they also have a club, cafe & bar. I dont think i slept more than 5 hrs a night when i was there last because i always get keyed up when im away...wanting to get out as early as possible and explore.

Thanks for all you help, i'll most likely go with the winston the location is great, looks pretty nice, & you cant grumble at 22 euro's a night.

glad you had a good trip, we getting a report? :)

Wow. That looks really nice.

A friend of mine called and booked at the Flying Pig a few days ago (he is going on a month long Eurotrip) and he said it sounded like a madhouse there. Like it was just one big party and he is going to stay at the downtown one.

Oh yeah forgot to ask is luggage storage included? or do you just have a locker?

What are the bar prices like...my idiot mate got back from the dam recently and the fool had been paying 6 euro's for a beer because he thought that was pretty standard  Told him the most i paid was 2-3 euro's & that was for actual beer as oppose to the glass of froth some places try to con you with.
