As you may have noticed, the forum went off on holiday for a while (probably smoking in Amsterdam) over the past few days. Not sure what happened. We were about to try to fix the problem with uploading avatars when phpBB suddenly lost contact with MySQL for some reason. Anyway, Peter has just managed to fix it.
