Why do haze strains have a lemon/citrus smell?
Why do haze strains have a lemon/citrus smell?
I've been smoking a few haze strains lately and a lot(not all) seem to have this lemon or citrus explosion once the bud is cracked open. Is this a trait of sativas, or just hazes?

I haven't found an indica with a lemon smell yet, for some reason it seems to be the sativa's that have this, but that makes sense. Thanks!

Re: Why do haze strains have a lemon/citrus smell?
The smells/flavors are caused by terpenes, which are chemical compounds the flower uses to attract pollinators. It's genetically encoded in each individual strain which terpenes that plant will produce, so you will find genetically related plants often smell (and taste similar). There are also a finite number of these terpenes, and mj plants can only (probably) produce certain ones, so strains that have no genetic similarity can still have similar aromas.
By the way these compounds are the same ones that make lemons smell lemony, mangoes etc.
I suspect what you are calling "that lemon smell" in certain sativas is actually a mix of a few terpenes.

Very interesting geekymonkey, thank you!
Re: Why do haze strains have a lemon/citrus smell?
Another fact I've read about terpenes : as they are genetically defined they "bind" with other traits. For example I've read that the terpenes giving an orange smell was pairing with a gene that makes the plant produces "less" thc.

Burrowing deeper into the nerdhole:
Traits do "bind" in plants and other stuff since genes are the biochemical expression of segments of the DNA that makes up each of the few dozen chromosomes in a cell. So in other words, each chromosome has a lot of genes in it, and usually the whole thing is inherited as a chunk (half from each parent, usually).
What's interesting is that when Mendel was playing around with his peas, trying to see how traits were inherited from generation to generation, he picked seven different traits to follow (smooth vs wrinkly peas, large vs small, light vs dark, etc). The thing is, he was lucky enough that each of the genes responsible was on a different chromosome, allowing his to "easily" get the cool random patterns he got, from which he deduced the basic system for the whole thing.
Of course, nobody listened until a few decades had passed and the guy was dead.
Yay science!

I always thought that the lemon smell was due to cats pissing on them.
Do ya stroke your pussy, skin up and pass the joint to someone, you should only really do this to people you don't like.A bit like picking your nose and then skinning up,or wiping your arse and then skinning up.

Limonene is the terpene that smells lemon/orange/citrus. I have always believed and been told Oranges will stop a whitey too. They say it destroys thc. Apparently orange/citrus good for cleaning bong.

That bit about oranges, I doubt is any more true than it would be with any other sugary food... probably some sort of corruption of the myth about vitamin C and LSD being synergistic when taken together (since, you know, ascorbic acid and lysergic acid are.. both acids? whateva...)
Drug folklore man... it's almost as if people tend to come up with weird ideas while on drugs, and then other people are made more gullible by those drugs as well

You must take care! In Germany the streets are full of Weed which was "Hazed" with so called "Haze-Spray" (just google for it..).The dealers usualy sell it as "Haze"
Look at your Haze, does it look very browny-orange? And are there little white crystalls which reflect light very strong??
Weed which was sprayed with Haze Spray smells strong like lemmon and orange too

Dude, Haze is a huge family of strains... it does not refer to spraying shit on weed (even though the word "haze" also means fog... you don't assume Skunk strains are sprayed with skunk pissWeedus wrote:robert__ wrote:I've been smoking a few haze strains lately and a lot(not all) seem to have this lemon or citrus explosion once the bud is cracked open. Haze-Spray has nothing to do with real Haze, its just the Name it got from someone.I know the normal Haze-Weeds,like silver haze for example. The Point is that Dealers which used the chemical Spray sell their Stuff as Haze dont matter what it is.
The Chemical Stuff is JHW-018,a synthetic Cannabinoid.
Read on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JWH-018
Weed which was spayed with Haze-Spray looks like this:

And it has a extreme strong lemmon/orange smell, like a orange Candy. You can see if wheed was hazed on the light reflecting Crystalls it has on it.
The original Haze-Spray contains synthetic JWH-018 Cannabinoids, dissolved in Acetone, then sprayed on cheap weed.
Just Google for Haze-Spray or Haze-Oil or JHW-18 Spray then you see what i mean and that its not a myth.
You smoke the stuff, first you wonder why it is soo strong, then you wonder why the effect is soo different and you start feeling like you took a bit mushrooms or lsd.Its not a normal THC-High
