This is a big issue for a lot of forums; I've been running a vBulletin forum for about 7 years now and we've had to do all sorts of things over the years to prevent spam, which we're now 99.9% successful at thankfully. Among other things we do use manual account verification though which I'd guess wouldn't be a great option here.

I would suggest the easiest solution for the problem on here right now would be to change the custom reg. question which currently asks for the initials in the site name iirc. That's only a temp. fix really and its tricky to come up with a question that is complex enough but doesn't flumox some legit people, but it would have an effect imo.

Without mod power all any of us can do is use the report button. Until recently I was proud to have never had to report a post on ACD. Now it is becoming a regular activity to report or try and report a spam post.
Often I'll find the post has already been reported then it stays up for a few days anyway.

Once the spammer gets in there are so few active mods that it takes a while to remove their posts, So the posts linger for a few days at times clogging the forum and generally devaluing others contributions.
It is not a big problem now but it looks to be worsening.
