Done about 30 dam visits over the years and these days prefer to base myself in haarlem and go from there. Just thought I'd pass on a few eating tips for anyone in the area.
1) Erawan- Thai restaurant about 5 min from the Grote Markt. About 20-25 euros, eat in or take away. Good value and decent selection. Definitely worth checking out.
2) Sumo- Japanese chain (I think there's one at the leidesplein as well) Fun. For about 20 euros you get 5 rounds where you can choose 5 dishes per round. Range of sushi and hot dishes. Good value and you get a a lot to eat. Fair play if you can eat it all- its more than I've managed even with the maddest munchies.
3) Stempels hotel- lovely place to stay but you can also have breakfast or dinner as a guest. About 12e for breakfast 30+ for dinner. Fantastic continental breakfast and I highly recommend the surprise dinner where they bring 4 or 6 courses of the chef's selection. Brings a touch of class to any coffeeshop tour.
4) Milanos pizza- alternatively a cheap and decent pizza takeaway about 5 minutes from Birdys. I think it closes at 8 so bear in mind. And if you ask very nicely you can bring it back to Birdys and eat it there.
There are more but I thought this would be a good start.
