Driving to Germany from Amsterdam?

Planning on renting a car and exploring the Dutch countryside on this visit again....

Last time I didn't make it into Germany, this time I am planning on going to Dusseldorf from Roermond NL.

My question and concern is with a boarder crossing into Germany, if there is one? Do they stop you to check passports or anything?

I'll be most likely carrying some goodies from Amsterdam and want to get an idea if I could expect any issues or not?

Thanks!

There is this old thread..... viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13091&start=15

Personally i have never been stopped going through France, Belgium and in and out of the Netherlands. Good point about the rental car though, it may make you a bit more conspicuous. Saying that there are many places to stash a smellproofed bit of gear in a car.

No border checks...
When crossing the border, you will notice the old check points, most are closed down.
I've driven, railed, and flown between Germany and The Netherlands for more than 10 years, and have only been checked once (on a train, I was with others who were profiled).
Best advise - obey the laws of the road, this will minimize exposure to DA MAN!

I just would hate to see anyone get arrested!

Without official borders, the customs police/Duane can stop a car anywhere, not just the border. So it depends on your tolerance for risk.....

The German Border Police could check you, they are on Watch with several cars at the Highway Border, and when you look suspicious they follow and stop you.

I can only suggest that you dont cross the Border on the Highway/Autobahn.They always look there with 2 or 3 Cars.
Leave the Highway as long as youre in Netherlands, and then drive trough one of the little border crossings which are only normal roads between towns.

When you want to Düsseldorf it would be a good Idea to cross the Border in the town of Eygelshoven (Netherlands) to Merkstein (Germany).I know this way cause i drive it myself all 5 Days, and Police is there, perhaps 1x Year ? (at least i dont see them more often there).Once in Merkstein you can drive to Autobahn again and keep there until you in Dusseldorf. You should be able to find all Waypoints with Google Maps easy ;)

The Borderpolice Cars dont have a Dog.When they are sure you have Drugs but they cant find them, then they bring you to their HQ and there is a Garage to search the Car and a Dog too,but they only bring you there when they are 100% sure you have Drugs and they cant find them.
So it could be a good Idea to let them find a bit in your Socks or Underwear,1 or 2 Gramms, and hide the other Stuff in or under your Car (taped). They stop so many Germans wtih a few Gramms of Weeds, its nothing suspicious for them to find such little amounts cause they know a Shop only sells 5 G/Person.When they find it you have to sign a Paper and then you can continue without a full check on the Car with Dog ;)

Oh,and make sure you have a good Story to tell why you was in Netherlands.
When you tell a lie, tell it with many little sidestories, for example get angry cause you had to pay a fine from wrong parking or you stepped into Dog shit and ruined your Shoes, something which dont belonghs to the actual lie.
You need a story where its plausible to drive with a rent car from Amsterdam to Germany ;)
Perhaps Forum People can help to invent one ;)

Some People said it would not be worth the Risk, well in Germany everything up to 7,5 Gramms Pure THC gets considered as own use and not punished as Crime. But you still will be punished with Money.
As they found 7 Gramms Weed on me (at the Border) i had to pay the income from 40 Work Days (its called Tagessatz),you then can decide pay it or go Prison for 40 Days. When youre unemployed a "Tagessatz" is considered 10 Euro.

So everything less than 7,5 Gramms pure thc (would be around 35 Gramms of very good Weed)
is considered own use and only punished with Money, but it could be alot money....

And like i said, when you take the Border i said you there is not much Risk,i drive it all 5 Days since nearly 20 Years and i was stopped only 2 times there from the Border Police, one time they not even found it cause they dont searched in my Underwear ;),the other time i had to pay Money for 7 Gramms Weed

Thanks for all the great info Weedus, some of which I'll be sure to follow.....

Didn't think about having to have a story, I though being a tourist traveling the Dutch and German countryside was enough?

But maybe a story about visiting friends or something is a good idea?

Board: Any other suggestions on stories?

No story required. You are a tourist visiting (insert town here) just don't look like Cheech and Chong with weed smoke billowing out of the car and you will be fine.
