Ah yus, you are probably right. This is always risk when you trust third parties with control of your money or coins. I am sure the golden rule in the MoM world is never spend more than you can afford to loose ;)

also, if SR properly backed up and encrypted their BTC wallet, then their is no reason another member of SR staff could not reclaim these if they have the appropriate details/backups. I doubt they will though....

the court report of the investigation and the charges brought against the accused, basically tells how they made a few noob mistakes at the start and got them busted.
The recent interview with forbes magazine probably did them no favors either......

The staged murder bit is especially wild

Amazing if he really did make some of those opsec mistakes. Hard to imagine someone being so dim and naive when there is so much at stake

I guess it had to be just a matter of time, I think just last week the NSA announced they'd cracked TOR.

So what will happen to the big guy, dreadlock pirate or whatever his name, is he looking at a long time not spending his dosh? Shame in a way but it was a lawless neighborhood and I personally found the whole virtual currency thing more than my old brain wanted to get round :|.
What a long strange trip it is.

arranging a murder with an UC agent is just crazy....... it really sounds like a crazy hollywood film plot, but all played out over the keyboard - real cyber criminals

I'm a bit disappointed  expected much more sordid stories! but at the same time I am amazed and puzzled at how wet behind the ears that "DPR' was

so basically, he was approached by a "massive" drug dealer. Got greedy, as if his massive website did not make enough commision?
then he got his friend to receive delivery of these drugs, his friend got busted, then DPR goes to the person who sent the drugs to assassinate his friend who received them.

Would it not have crossed his mind the delivery was a setup? he really does sound like a bit of a greedy idiot when reading that

Also it kind of sounds like the cops played him, busted this guy, knowing it would create tension and a possible murder charge.

really the bust has nothing to do with breaking Tor, reading the report it seems they could not. SO instead they did some traditional police work but online and investigated history as such....

As elasticband says, it was using a gmail account in his real name, ordering 9 fake IDs (probably from a UC source) and other silly mistakes early on - see the "altoid" forum posts. Although traffic analysis can reveal the location of a hidden server (and this was the world's busiest hidden service), it was just stupid persec errors that brought this bust about.

Has been fun watching elasticband on localbitcoins - the courageous day traders are doing well off this.

Not so easy if you're a vendor who has fronted "product" and had buyers' money in escrow. The forums are full of people who have lost thousands or tens of thousands.

And also a few heroin addicts whining about where to go next.

local bitcoin trading is a slow game really.

BTC-E exchange last night was a beautiful experience, price swings ranging from $125 down to $78, back upto $100, back down to $80 upto $90 then it all rebounded back to around $110 today on btc-e.com exchange. Glad i was in front of the computer for that one :)

same golden rule applys for a vendor in my eyes, SR was never a sure thing, every one took a gamble having money on there and everyone knew they could get burned, this includes vendors. Never handle more weight than you can afford to front yourself.
