Do you carry it?

Considering you're meant to and the consequences?

I just use my passport to get into the country and get home. The rest of the time it will be in the hotel/apartment.

I have never been asked but if i was, the photo part of my driving license is sufficient.

Way too much grief if it was to be lost or stolen, grief does not hand in hand with a happy stone

The fine is €60 and payable immediately if you're not a Dutch Resident/Citizen. And a driver's license won't get you into an embassy/consulate.

So is a drivers license acceptable?

60e is ok, I will take the risk and not carry it and behave myself on the streets.

I think the UK embassy will let you in if you have lost your passport. They did back in 08 when a mate lost his while puggled. It was this incident that kinda made me just not carry it around with me.

If issued within the EU, yes its acceptable for the police. A coffeeshop, cafe and some clubs will take a DL as ID.

If its lost yes, but not if a political situation where to arise. Been there done that in Thailand during the protests in 2010.
