Hey all, my and Wife are gearing up for our tearly visit coming on Dec 14th for 3 nights and to our shame we have never used the trams as we needed really needed to (walked everywhere).
We know to get 3 day OV chipkaart at central station or any GVB kiosk but I ain't got a clue about the tram numbers, routes etc so if anyone can point me in my way it will be ever so helpful. Thanks. :D

You're confusing the multi-day GVB passes and the national OV Chipkaart.

The 9292.nl app for your phone is a good tool for figuring out your route.

The only places to get the anonymous GVB multi day pass are:

1: Schiphol TI (this is where I get mine). You can also buy a train ticket there.

2: GVB office just outside Centraal. The queue can be somewhat long, it is hot in there (I call it "Dutch warm:-)", and luggage gets in the way. This is why I get mine at Schiphol TI.

3. Vending machines at Metro stops. I have never done this.

Using the tram:

Rule # 1: Don't go in an exit door, and don't exit through an entry door.

Entry: in the first car, where the driver sits. Better is the next to last set of doors (not the last door, that is exit only). The conductor booth (for most trams, they are sometimes unmanned) is located at the next to last set of doors (double doors). This is the preferred point of entry.

Swipe your card on both entry and exit.

If you fancy a CS crawl based on trams, I can hook you up :-)

Thanks for the info Lafe the main thing I want to know is Tram numbers/destinations etc as our hotel (sint nicholaas) has a tram line right beside it and it would be nice to take if the weather is horrible (very likely), again thank you very much Lafe you have been very helpful. (A rarity on these boards nowadays.)
P.S. We should be ok with a tram coffeeshop crawl as we like to go wandering and try and find certain CS on my list. :D

Trams 1, 2, and 5 go past on NZ Voorburgwal. Due to track work, things have changed a bit recently but 1 and 2 will still take you to Leidseplein albeit a different route. 5 does not do this (normally goes through Leidseplein), so avoid this one unless you want to go elsewhere.

If you get lost, don't freak out. Just get off at the next stop, wait for the tram coming back from the other direction, and hop on. No big deal.

Here is an easy tram based crawl that takes you on the perimeter of Centrum, starting at Leidseplein:

Grab yer ACD map and hit the following near Leidseplein:

Rookies
Dolphins
Noon
Happy Feelings

Now find the other tram stop, just on the south end of Leidseplein. Catch Tram 10, direction Westerpark (or Van Hallstraat, I think they changed it recently). Ride maybe three stops and find 1e Hulp. You could walk it but this saves time.

Leave 1e Hulp, go back the other direction toward Leidseplein, again on Tram 10. Pass Leidseplein, get off at Weteringcircuit in the shadow of the Heineken brewery and find Mellow Yellow and Little. They are close.

You can from there walk past the brewery and be at both Club Media, De Graal, and Katsu in short order. You could also take a tram a few stops that way if you wish to save time.

Back out to Weteringcircuit, get on 10 again and ride to Weesperplein. Trinity is in the area (possibly moved, Gapie knows where it is), as well as Het Ballonetje. Back out to Sarphatistraat, catch 10 and ride a few stops to Hoogte Kadijk. Happy People is there, just at the entrance to Dappermarkt. There is another shop in the area, Trefpunt. I have not been there but why not check it out?

Also, if you fancy a beer, the windmill brewery is right there (Brouwerij 't IJ).

Happy People will ask you to buy before entering, so be aware. Their window seats are right chilled IMO.

That's a long day of crawling, particularly if you break off and do Media, Katsu, and de Graal.
