Young Boy Killed By Bear In American Fork Canyon
SLIDESHOW: Utah Is Black Bear Country
SLIDESHOW: Wildlife Officials Kill Black Bear
(KUTV) PROVO Wildlife officers fatally shot a black bear Monday, hours after an 11-year-old boy was snatched from his family's tent and killed, a rare attack in Utah's Wasatch Mountains.
With 26 dogs assisting them in the search, authorities were confident that the bear was the same one that ripped through the tent shortly before midnight Sunday.
The bear was killed about 11:30 a.m. MDT near the area where the victim was mauled, said Lt. Scott White of the Utah Divison of Wildlife Resources.
``Truly a tragic event. ... Events of this type are extremely rare in Utah,'' Jim Karpowitz, director of the wildlife agency, said at a news conference before the bear's death was reported.
``I know of no other fatalities by a black bear in Utah,'' he said.
The boy, his mother, stepfather and a 6-year-old brother were sleeping in a large tent in a primitive camping area, about 30 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.
The stepfather heard a scream, and the boy and his sleeping bag were gone. A host from a nearby campground contacted police.
``When we got up there we realized, hey, this looks like a bear. The sleeping bag was pulled out of the tent,'' said Lt. Dennis Harris of the Utah County sheriff's office.
He said the boy's body was found about 400 yards away, in the direction of another campsite where a bear was seen earlier in the weekend and pursued by dogs without success. Authorities believe it was the same bear that killed the boy.
``When it's hot and dry like this, bears are short of food,'' Karpowitz said.
The Utah wildlife agency and the U.S. Forest Service pursued the wounded bear with the help of a helicopter. It was described as a male, possibly 300 pounds and ``jet black.''
American Fork Canyon is a popular camping destination and home to Timpanogos Cave National Monument. Harris said the family was camping about two miles up a dirt road.
``It's shaken everybody up. We're all distraught,'' said Scott Root, conservation outreach manager at the Utah wildlife agency. ``It could put a lot of fear in the public.''
It was not known what provoked the bear, though a bear can smell food for miles.
``They stick their nose in the air. It's like radar,'' said Hal Black, a biologist at Brigham Young University in Provo.
In July 2006, a black bear bit the arm of a 14-year-old Boy Scout while he slept in a tent, also in Utah County. The female bear returned to the campground and was killed. The boy was not seriously injured.

You gotta love it. The subject title is "Personal Weapons" and now we're talking about bongs......true stoners one and all.
sorry pan4gold49...i was the one who got things off-off topic there, just thought the thread had died so i tried to post something funny.
being serious thoug i would consider many options about what type of firearm for your circumstance.
while the 9MM will definitely stop most bears, keep in mind that you will need to be an average shot, the bear will need to be hit several times and yes, you will need hollow point rather than plain old target or range loads. the obvious advantage with the 9MM is the high capacity (15 + 1 fully loaded) and it is a fine protection weapon (i'm talking GLOCK now).
still, i would lean a little more to maybe a .40 or GLOCK-23. this is the weapon of choice for all state troopers and highway patrol in our state where i was recently involved with the latter due to the fact that i smashed my car up during the winter. while waiting for my wife to pick me up i asked him what type of sidearm he carried and he said it was the GLOCK-23 (which has a 13 + 1 capacity fully loaded) because; "we're out here all alone most of the time". he still longed for his old SIG though...to each their own.
even still, i would think if you are ONLY talking about protection from wildlife rather than human beings, a riffle or shotgun might be your best bet. firing a riffle is quite simple and acurate from long distances, shooting a shotgun can tear your arm apart!!!
oh yea after my friend's dad smashed the bong against the trash can - spewing water all over him and his precious mercedes - he proceeded to smash our "donger", fuckhead

All these years later...the memmory lingers...and its the eyes that dont close...you see them....And I wonder if I'm looking at life thru dead people eyes...and I'm not proud....I put one foot in frount of the other
and I'm not proud....knowing on that one day I was better...I AM NOT PROUD
I recall reading it at the time, but that was when conversing together was not an option...
are you asking a question for us to respond or letting us know that you have killed somebody ? I'm unsure... I do know though, If I was in a "me or them" situation, I'd kill, without a doubt. I'd do the time for. But I say that about how I would defend my own life, wouldn't everybody ?

If that's the question, then of course. Not something I want to think about though.

Oh man what a buzz kill I'm going back to singing and dancing in my chair! Guess that's why I provide comic relief in heavy times... I'd rather laugh
PS. I saw that way back, blue but wasn't quite sure what you meant from your heart. Is it your story or someone else's close to you now gone (you know who I mean)?

well Blue I for one also have seen life snuffed out a a victim, but not because of killing them, because of my job as a trauma nurse. so blue may have just witnessed it, like me, not killed them.

Let's go to 'Black Bear Country' take the wife and kids 2 miles 'up a dirt road' pitch the tent, spark the barby and see if we can't get ourselves eaten by some black bears. Kinda like goin swimming and complaining about getting wet.
Personally, I don't think a person with this type of mental reasoning should ever be allowed to own a gun anyway.
As for the 'Me or Them' question, I'd hope instinct would kick in to ensure the answer was always 'Them'. Guilt effects people in different ways, depends on the individual but I'd rather have to deal with it ...than not. Mind you, that's self defence ...Murder on the other hand is a whole different ball game. For example, I'm off tomorrow so I'm gonna murder this block of ice I've got and I don't feel any guilt at all.
Hope this debate doesn’t become worthy of the Argument Clinic. I guess there’s a cultural divide going on. Here in the UK only dangerous criminals carry guns and most peaceful stoners wouldn’t even contemplate processing such a violent implement. It sounds quite incongruous to see guns discussed so matter-of-factly on a forum like this. Then again, we don’t have many bears here!
In most of the world outside of the United States it is considered abberant to own a gun unless you are A) law enforcement or B) criminal
Gun owning - even in the name of - self defense is an American particular. I grew up around guns. I am a good shot. But I don't own one now as I see no need. Even with bears and other large animals occasionally making their way onto my property. If you've got a herd or pack to protect for I can see it (as is often the case in the wilder areas of America. Otherwise gun toting is just macho IMO.
