Forum Spam

Post by slimline »

Hi all,

I had taken down the forum whilst I hacked in to get admin rights.

I've now accomplished that and have stopped user registrations, hopefully stop anymore bots for the time being.

Not heard anything from Lemming.

You will have to give me time to learn how to deal with the forum and the spam. I'm a systems admin. :?

Regards

Pete

Since the existing bots are still active, I expect you'll have to ban each and delete their account.

Hopefully each bot's posts will be deleted when the account is deleted.

Well I learned how to write a term paper, got rid of my zits, and got a new kitchen so all in all not too bad.

Nice one Slimline, had to be done to save the forum. Thank you :D

Sure you've figured this yourself but I believe in the admin cp it should be relatively easy to remove the spam users through the Users & Groups => Prune Users option, should be an option to remove all their posts too.

Perhaps it would be helpful if we started making a list of the accounts that need to go etc, starting with the ones actively adding more spam right now? These have all posted since you put the forum back up.

Of course the alternative would be to mass prune new users by date (say nuke everyone who registered in the previous week or so), there would be collateral damage possibly of a few legit accounts but unlikely any real harm would be done...

My suggestion would be to get rid of all the new users that are just spammers that haven't posted yet. To the spammers these are just backup accounts for when one of their active accounts gets deleted.
I'm just a retired old dude with lots of time. So if you need any assistance just holler my way.

Enjoy

A slight glimmer of hope has flickered on the horizon... Soon as Lemming makes an appearance we can start to breath easy.

...Thanks again for making the decision, Slimline!
