Double Paid!!!

Post by montana85 »

Yo guys. Was supposed to get paid Friday past and there was some problem with my works bank account. It did go on later in the day so all was good. Woke up this morning thought Id check my account and my work has put in another payment of £1,615 (this went in twice!). Im over the f###ing moon to sat the least! I know its a mistake and they will want it back, but im spending it and they can get it back £50 a month or so! Another of my colleauges whos been paid the same says hes starting a new job after christmas so hes gonna spend it! Says they will take him to court but they will make him pay back minimum payments i.e. £10 a week as if its a fine! Any thoughts guys before I blow it on weed? Even considering Dam for new year, courtesy of my very nice company! Might not go back and work for them either. Merry Christmas!!!! :D

Just pay it back. You'll cause more problems for yourself in the long run and it may affect your chances of getting a new job.

@smirks, Now I'm baked and my conscience is kicking in (or paranoia!), spending it doesn't seem such a good idea! It's still tempting tho as the company has been treating us all really badly lately! Amsterdam for my first new year woulda been nice tho! Hopefully one day!.....

unfortunately smirks is right.
…in the end you will be responsible for returning the money and your actions will affect future situations.

how about starting a weekly savings account building for the next dam trip.

Your colleague is wrong. In order for a court to accept a minimum payment like that he would have to prove that (a) he did not realise he had been overpaid and spent it in good faith, and (b) that it would cause him significant financial hardship to repay it either entirely, or in bigger instalments. The court would look into how the money was spent to establish this - it is very difficult to justify a sudden and immediate spend of an obvious overpayment as ignorance of an error. £10/month would be treated as the pisstake it is imo.

As for yourself, again I very much doubt your employer will accept £50/month as a reasonable offer. Ultimately if you are sure you can get another job, with no reference from your previous employer, on at least the same pay and within a month (or you'd lose at least what you've made), then go for it.... though you will still have to pay it back in the end so won't actually come out ahead.

I have experience of this sort of situation and spending it is not even remotely sensible, indeed it is pretty stupid for the amount of hassle and ultimate lack of reward.

@not_the_monk, I have moved it to a savings account and not touched it. It was just one of those things, you wake up on hols with extra money and feel like hitting the dam! I realised I couldn't once I thought about it. I haven't spoke to my mates but a few of them are proper piss heads & I am almost certain they will spend it. Up to them I suppose. I got plenty stash anyway!

I wouldn't post this here... unless I wanted to have my mind changed. Do whatever you feel is right, you won't hurt me or anybody else from this forum. :)

Good thinking dude, I just reread my initial post and it came over as a bit of a lecture so apologies, I know most people's initial reaction would naturally be "waheeeeey!", it is just as I said though I do know someone this happened to (and in their case it was a misplaced decimal point so really major) and the wrong decision they made did not work out very well in the end, lets just say that ;)

Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I gave it back though. Because peace of mind and being able to sleep at night is more important than a few dollars IMO.
