I've lost all interest in the Olympics, both Winter and Summer.
Perhaps a more fitting name is Corporate Olympics, Winter Edition 2014...
Let's look at the next few games...
Rio - Summer 2016
Pyeongchang, South Korea - Winter 2018
Tokyo - Summer 2020
All have years to prepare, however, which of these cities (all perhaps) will be scrambling at the last minute to complete construction/etc..., like most host cities have in the recent past, Sochi being the most recent?
Check the cost of hosting the Olympic Games, talk about fraud/waste/abuse/fleecing, not to mention graft.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost_of_the_Olympic_Games
Example...
In 1984, the cost of the Sarajevo Winter Games was $110.9 Million.
In 2014, estimates place the Sochi Winter Games at $51 Billion.
WTF? Skating on frozen champagne? Skiing on mountains of cocaine?
Perhaps the next couple of Olympics will see more reasonable spending, but there will still be fraud/waste/abuse, which most will turn a blind eye.
Bottom line, the Olympics have been converted into opportunities for corporate profit.
When the games are done and the corporations leave, the locals are stuck with facilities that will become underutilized, ie... white elephants.
Insult to injury - the taxpayers will continue to pay the corporate bill YEARS after the games have ended.
Perhaps it's time to rethink how the games are conducted, ie... designate one location for the Summer Games, and one location for the Winter Games. All participating countries donates funds to support the cost. After the initial construction, most expenditures of resources would be for maintenance.
