CloudMaster & Exceluk1 - Trip Report - 10th to 13th Feb

Post by CloudMaster »

Exceluk1 & I decided it would be a fun idea to write a tandem trip report instead of two individual ones, so here goes………

Day 1: Monday 10th February

CloudMaster:
Arose from sleep at 3am, 3 hours sleep was all I could manage due to the anticipation and excitement of my forthcoming adventures!

Quick wake n bake with a last cup of proper homemade tea then off to get showered and changed.

4am, taxi arrives and I’m on way to the Airport, butterflies in my stomach. I think about what the wife said to me the previous evening and her words unsettle me slightly. The thing is Excel and I have only known each other as pals since February 2013 via ACD & FlyByNite’s chat room, we met once in late August 2013 for a couple of hours (geographically distant) but it was a brief encounter. Excel was on a job near me and came round for dinner which I made a superb job of cremating, lol. Anyhow we talked about my previous trip which was June 2013 as he was going the following week, his 1st trip. He told me he was staying at bed and net. The wife’s was pulling my leg and told me that I was effectively going on holiday with a stranger, could be serial killer for all I knew, lol…….

4.30am, taxi arrives at Gatwick and I’m into the massed ranks of the army of people clearing security, hand luggage only so 5 minutes and I’m through, very surprised! Time for a last hot brew in the UK, WC stop and then through to boarding, message on phone from Excel to say he is leaving home at his end. It’s happening, it finally sinks in, I’m going on yet another smoke up but this time with a new buddy! Boarding commences shortly and I’m on the plane for take off due at 6.10am, a slight delay as air traffic control say we have to wait 20 minutes.

8.10am arrive at Schipol after making up time in the air, not a graceful landing, just glad to be on terra firma again! Again out through passport control and over to the train station with my wheeled bag very quickly. I’m on the train to Central Station by 8.40am, as I sit I think about all the Coffeeshops we’ve chatted about, all the things we would like to do and the plans we had made over the last few months. It could all go to pot (pun intended) as we may not get on for 4 days, what if it’s awkward? hey ho I’m now thinking about my 1st Coffeeshop stop, its early and I have nearly an hour and half to kill before Excel arrives at the station. I weigh up my options and head for Prix Dami, not been there for few years so thought I’d check out this old favourite of mine.

9.20am, stood at the counter in Prix Dami, not too many customers but its so noisy, they are having the drinks delivery which involves getting trollies of drinks crates up and down 2 flights of stairs, each time they went up it was a fantastic loud crash to the ears. The decor on the ground floor is very pink and I’m fresh off a train and plane, feels very surreal. I politely ask the bud tender if he will allow me 2 grams but in different strain half gram measures, he declines but it was worth a try. I purchase 1g Super Silver Haze @ 11.50€ and sit in the front with my Chocomel and weed, need the drink more than the smoke as I’m parched. BT lets me take a menu pic, nice. I roll a few out of the gram leaving just a little for the vape in the apartment. I smoke one but don’t notice the effects as I’m just starting to relax. Chat to the doorman for a bit, finish my drink and smoke then think about heading back to the station to meet Excel.

I head off back to Central Station to meet Excel, he will arrive soon and now I can feel the effects coming through. I’m warm and light headed, slight sweat coming on, feel the high and it’s good, so good I can feel myself begin to grin…….

5 minute wait for Excel, he told me he would be wearing a red coat so not hard to spot (he was certainly wearing a red coat, that was for sure, lol. Sorry Excel but it had to be said….. ) saying that, I was wearing about 5 layers and a raincoat expecting sub arctic temperatures and downpours of one kind or another, lol.

We greet each other and head off for the tram, he has a big bag for 3 nights, 4 days compared to my little wheels (over compensating I think, ). He notices my grin and asks if I had a chance to grab anything before he got there, my smile enlarges as I tell him the welcome pack is in my possession. Excel hands me back my chipkart which he had borrowed last year and tells me there is over 30€ on it to spend, he has his brothers from his previous trip so we jump on the tram to our digs.

We are staying in the basement at bed and net on the Keizersgracht, short tram ride from town and just round the corner from the Rembrandtplein. The apartment looked really good on the website, bongs, pipes and a vape supplied. TV with PC and projector, nice chilling area. We stop close to the Albert Hein near the digs and grab a few supplies (teabags already in luggage oh yes, I’m from the UK). We walk to the Apartment and are let in, the rooms are ready so we start settling in. Excel wastes no time and gets in touch with Padge, he is living in Amsterdam and has met Excel before, Padge and I have chatted a few times online and he seems a nice chap. Padge is coming round and we will decide where to go from there. Excel offers to make tea but as will be the case often during the trip it fails to materialise :( .

It’s around lunchtime (timings are vague after this point, ) when Padge arrives and Excel introduces us. I notice quickly that Padge has the typical build of a rugby player and we were soon acquainted by our love of the game. Excel & I had made a start on the smokes which I had pre-rolled earlier and now he seems a little withdrawn. Padge has a bag of something nice and rolls a few of his and we share some of the SSH in the vape, probably not the best idea after very little sleep and a manic morning but what the heck I am on holiday  . 3 of us head off to Barney’s Lounge.

Barney’s as usual is great for customer service, no one queuing at the counter so we go up and ask the Budtenderess to look at Grinspoon and Pineapple Chunk. The Pineapple Chunk is pretty good looking and has that distinct aroma but it was not the best I’ve tried but it would be a nice smoke still. The Grinspoon, well I can never tell with this stuff, it looked pretty fresh, had the end of a tub of from Amnesia last year and it blew me away.

The stone sets in for me as we sit down to drinks, Excel tells me he has got me mint tea but I’m served what looks like an ordinary tea bag with hot water and milk on the side?? Confused I don’t add the milk and drink the tea but it doesn’t taste very minty :? , my hearing is bad so I had misheard the waitress, apparently Excel had ordered 2 ordinary teas whilst she prepared the real mint leaf tea  .

Padge and I roll a few to pass round and Excel becomes even more withdrawn, we have a few smokes but neither Padge or I notice that Excel looks like he has a sweat on from eating a vindaloo curry. Fear not the BT has spotted his discomfort and swiftly arrives with a damp cool towel and ice, he is then offered a sweet sugar water to raise his levels and all is good. Lucky devil then has the BT make a real fuss of him as she caresses his head and massages his shoulders, what a put on. The mint tea was very authentic and refreshing. We leave thanking Barney’s for their super hospitality, they looked after us well.

We head back to the apartment with our purchases for a proper test of the vape, we still had a little SSH left but now had 2 other bags plus the nice buds that Padge had brought along, it was a good test and after a couple of hours Padge made his farewells and said he would meet us the next day. I’d lost my appetite through fatigue and smoking a few sativa dominant strains, Excel decides that we should refuel with suitable stoner munchies so that’s what we proceeded to do. I make hot teas (Excel, I’m sorry but the kettle story is going in later……. ), suitably refuelled we are ready for our next adventure to Greenhouse Namaste (cool name, small shop but nice).

We arrive at Greenhouse and it’s the usual conundrum for me, so many strains, so much choice, what do I choose? Hash, bud or both? Then I see something I’ve never tried, Afghoeey. I couldn’t place the bouquet, floral? Spicy? Very pleasant anyhow. Excel went for Super Lemon Haze. We look at the Lemon Crystal, not sure we put it on our maybe list for another night. Our choices would have to be a little more selective from now on as we were starting to build a collection of smokes. We get drinks and sit down, Excel looks eagerly at me and is itching for me to roll one so I oblige. I knew before the trip that Excel was not a roller and made a joke with him about how much of a burden having to do all the rolling would be  I'm happy to toil .

We decide we would go to the Bushdoctor near the Rembrandtplein and take a look at their extracts, another possible treat for our last night, ended up purchasing a 1g of quality Charas. Not sure if the BT tried to pull a fast one as he pulled out some soft Moroccan first before I pointed out that what we wanted was soft Indian hash.

We leave Bushdoctor but are lured back to Barney’s on the way back to our digs, we buy and fly with 1g Red Berry Cherry & 1g Royal Jelly hash, yummy.

It’s around 10pm now and we head back to our apartment tired but stoned happy, we relax to some chilled music in the apartment courtesy of spotify. Excel offers to make tea but it never appears, pattern emerging. I roll, we smoke and vape into the early hours of the morning before we decide to call it quits. So far so good, the day has been great fun with great company and the smokes have not been bad either. I sleep like a baby, tomorrow will start with a lie in, breakfast then off to Voyagers for Testing Tuesday.

Exceluk1:
Arrived in centrum at 1030 which was an hour before I thought I would, result. Now just to meet up with CM. Weather is a little overcast with a cold breeze but dry. Stood for less than 20 minutes taking in the sights and sounds, am I really here???? :D CM has already been in town for an hour and picked up some SSH from Prix Dami. Judging by the smile on his face we are good to head off to the apartment.

BedandNet on Keizersgracht is where I had stayed on my virgin trip in September last year, it is no hotel but where it lacks it more than makes up for in character, location and making you feel like a local. We jumped on the No4 tram right outside centrum and headed off. A quick stock up on essentials for the room and we are soon sat with a brew and joint each. This is my 1st good smoke in some months and can feel the effect creep nicely. Padge joins us and we head for the local Barney's Lounge, 200m local, refreshed and now all smiling.

Barney's lounge - Small sized coffeeshop and I’d say a little cleaner / smarter than the others in the brand, due to the location it doesn't become overly busy too. Purchased a gram of Pineapple Chunk and Dr Grinspoon. The Pineapple did not give me the punch in flavour I’d hoped, but the effect was very good. The Dr Grinspoon I can't recall. Anyway I proceeded to nearly white out and had the lovely female staff look after me with a nice cold towel and neck rub  A walk, some fresh air and good to go.

Greenhouse Namaste - Super Lemon Haze and afghooey.
The SLH is ok but again still not a patch in flavour to Voyagers. The Afghooey was a nice frosted bud with a nice effect and became a good mixer for later.we stayed for a chocomel and a quick joint and moved onto Bush Doctor. The one thing we wanted to do on this trip was to try some higher grade hash and Bush Doctor had a great selection, opting for a cheap manali cream that was sweet and spicy.

Back too Barneys - Thought it a good idea to head back to Barneys as we were both very tired from the full day and very stoned. We had a quick look at the Liberty melt @ 60e a gram which looked like a great extract but as we had no intention of dabbing we took a gram of Royal Jelly and red Cherry Berry. Back in the room the Royal Jelly was pasted into a joint and made a great smoke. The SLH was vaped but left me wanting for the Voyagers sample I had last trip.

No doubt, this report promises to be great fun. Very good idea to tell the story from two points of view.
Thanks for sharing.

Nice start. I love Barney's lounge. They always look after you.

A mate whitied there a few years back and they sorted him out quick smart.

Looking forward to the rest

How dare you not have gone to Voyagers yet!

Just kidding.

Really enjoying your trip reports. Good idea to do them in tandem like that. About that Prix d'ami BT refusing to sell you 1/2 gram deals....
I also like to buy 1/2 gram deals so I can try more strains without 'straining' my wallet.

If a BT ever refuses to sell you 1/2 grams for no good reason I'd strongly consider taking my business elsewhere. In a pre bagged place or in a super busy situation it might be understandable but otherwise I tend to smile, wish the BT a good day then move on down the road. Never to return.
Plenty of other places are more than happy to do 1/2 grams anyway. They give my needs a little consideration then I'll give them my money instead. A fair deal IMHO.
How much did you produce?

Most places will happily sell 1/2 grams as long as you point out that you'd like multiple strains. I was actually surprised Prix d'ami refused to do 1/2 grams from someone who wanted to buy 2g. It could be a shop policy or a lazy BT or some other reason (busy).
Some places have minimum purchases based on money spent or weight but very rarely have I ever had to 'walk' due to a refusal. 'High Times' coffee shop was one instance though. BT was nice enough. Just shop policy not to sell 1/2 gram deals. I thanked him for his time and moved on.

Day 2: Tuesday 11th February

CloudMaster:
Wake around 10am and soon realise how stoned I am from the night before (a nice fuzzy feeling 8) ). Excel is already up and finding music to play on Spotify. I put the kettle on whilst I go brush my teeth in readiness for our 1st wake n bake in Amsterdam this week. Whilst I’m in the bathroom I notice that there is something strange about our WC, there is a bin next to the loo for waste paper tissue, what’s that all about :? I ask myself trying put the worst case scenario out of my mind?

Tea is made and we sit down to smoke a few of the previous night’s selection, mention the WC to Excel and he explains that the apartment rep had told him the pump had failed (fairly crucial as it had to pump upwards) and if we wanted to use the loo for a number 2, tissues would have to go in the waste paper bin. I feel myself shudder in horror at the thought  ! Luckily there is a communal bathroom upstairs that does not have these issues.
We finish breakfast and get ready, Excel comments that there may be a water shortage in the Netherlands if I spend any longer in the shower.

Finally we head out of the door but not before I’m given another piece of less than pleasant information, one of the young ladies who tends the apartment apologises for the really bad smell in the WC area, the pump not working is causing back venting of gas. Oh my, I don’t know what to say  , Excel compounds the moment by standing and talking with one of the staff he met last year for another 5 minutes  .

We jump on the tram from the Rembrandtplein and head off back towards Central Station, we are heading to Voyagers when Excel receives a message from Padge, he can’t meet us for Testing Tuesday but will catch up with us in the afternoon. We enter Voyagers with ID’s in hand. HB is not around and I’m disappointed not to have been manhandled by his very large and energetic dog. Voyagers rarely disappoints, last year in June I had tested YU10 from Voyagers on a Tuesday and it was almost my favourite smoke of the trip. So I pick up 1g of Week? Testing and Excel opts for Super SSD.

Shock horror  , Voyagers have hot chocolate but no Chocomel so I decide I will have a cappuccino (not drank coffee for about 5 years, this would be an interesting experience). As we sit down to roll, we notice 2 chaps sat by the window closest to the counter/bar area, a group of 4 sat at a table in front of us and 2 chaps next to us. The chaps by the window have me captivated with their conversation (well one chap was doing all the talking), it’s a loud monotone but very mundane conversation, the loudest one sounds punch drunk and is not only entertaining me but the 4 chaps sat at the table in front of us. Entertainment turns to annoyance and we decide we are going to leave with our purchases.

Before we leave I watch one of the chaps next to us use the vape, not being an expert vaper I decide to ask the chap how he is using it, he is German and we struggle to communicate but I see the temperature he has set the vape at and I realise we had set ours way too high the other night. The caffeine kicks in for me and I’m now keen to go exploring.

We head to Greenplace, heard lots about this place recently but had not been there since 2009 (their purple wreck was an old favourite of mine). We are looking down the menu when I recall what I had said to Excel about trying some of the older now less popular strains that I remembered. So with that in mind I opt for 2g Northern Lights @ 14€, it was a good batch and worth it at that price, tempted to look at the Kush’s but managed to resist, still 2 days of the trip left and this was only our 2nd coffeeshop of the day. We enjoy a hot drink and I roll a hash joint out of the Royal Jelly to help bring me down from the caffeine high which I was not enjoying and rolled Excel a NL joint which he seemed to savour.

It’s past lunchtime when we decide we want to eat and head back to the apartment, we would refuel and go back out later. We walk back to the apartment from Centruum and I’m impressed that for once my bearings are on track. I’ve been coming to Amsterdam with my brother and friends for about 15 years but always relied on others especially my brother to navigate around the city. This trip it was easier to find our way around as most of the old pink and white signs have been replaced by black signs with very classy gold writing.

We arrive back at the apartment with the intention of dropping off our purchases and heading off to the market, Excel has agreed to cook dinner for 6 tomorrow night so we are after fresh ingredients etc. Plans go awry as we descend in to yet another smoking session, well you have to sample your purchases for quality etc  . The testing bud from Voyagers is fairly potent and is well worth 10€, the Super SSD is also a fantastic smoke and very tast. We load the vape with some NL and decide that too was very good value for money. We look at our watches and realise that we have just spent another half and a half smoking, best get out to the market and get those bits needed for dinner the next night.

We walk to the Albert Cuyp market and whilst on route I notice the area, de pijp, we walk past the Heineken experience and I reminisce over trips from long ago, Mellow Yellow, Katsu etc. It’s been a while since I’ve been to this part of town, 8 years in fact! Excel is keen to get to the market and I will soon see why.

Having chatted with Excel over the last year I know he has a taste for seafood and he is soon in heaven wandering from one fish stall to another. I’m not a seafood person and the odour is making me want to heave, smell of the ocean he says, me I am not so sure. I make off up the market and leave him to admire his piscatorial wonders. Excel is going to cook a dry piri piri chicken dish so needs some spices and meat. We find an excellent stall selling herbs, spices, rubs, mixes etc, there is even a specialist counter for leaf tea so you could make up your own blends etc.

A slightly awkward moment as Excel enquires about tea, the chap behind the counter asks Excel what tea he likes, Excel replies something strong, English tea, the chap behind the counter smiles and points out that English tea is not strong at all and offers Excel some Russian Caravan Tea. We pay for our purchases and are just about to leave when the owner of the stall hands us 2 free bags of spices and tells us they are for our wives/girlfriends, the packets are labelled “liefdesmix” which I think translates to “love mix”, a nice touch and clever marketing. We leave the market after Excel picks up a huge amount of chicken for about 7.50€ and some incense sticks for the odour issue in the apartment, we stop at the profertjes stall for a morsel of a treat before finally heading back to the apartment.

Very hungry now, we dump our purchases at the apartment and seek out quick food nearby, finding a reasonably healthy selection of cheese and veggie pizza, we swiftly ruin the healthy eating by downing the most popular snack in Amsterdam, fries with sauce. It starts raining hard at this stage so we decide to head back to the apartment and chill until we hear from Padge.

Around 3.30pm and we hear from Padge, he will meet us in half hour. Excel decides he wants to go Barney’s lounge again and sample some other buds so we head off, less than 5 minutes from our apartment makes it far too convenient, lol. We decide we want to try their Amnesia and Blue Cheese. Excel seems to have found his level now and is really getting stuck in to the smokes just as Padge arrives :D . Padge has purchased some OG Bubba Kush from somewhere and the 3 of us are soon heading back to the apartment for more smoking and vaping.

The afternoon turns in to another session of sampling with so many choices now. We think about heading out again but the weather has taken a turn for the worse, lashing rain and blustery. We enjoy ourselves smoking and vaping until around 6pm when Padge decides he has to head off, we have agreed to meet him the following morning for a proper trip round the de pijp coffeeshops. Excel has one final attempt at trying to convince Padge to come to ours for dinner with his GF tomorrow night, Padge explains that his GF is a bit under the weather and that it would have to be a maybe.

Padge leaves and Excel gets to grips with marinating his meat for the dinner tomorrow, I in the meantime sit and enjoy a smoke whilst catching up with the news and weather in the UK, floods are reported to be causing chaos and the army are being called in some places, wow. We concoct yet another dinner from our supplies and decide we want to go out again but not too far.

Back to Barney’s Lounge and Excel decides he wants to purchase a better grade of hash, the BT shows him the Parvati Pollen and he is immediately impressed, he calls me over to inspect and I’m almost left salivating at the thought of smoking this oily soft soft hash which has a very exotic and fresh aroma , we hold fire on this and choose SLH for the time being. We ask for a vape bag to use with our buds and the BT informs us of yet another way to use the vape, start the temp at 175 for the 1st burn, then up 5 degrees for each burn thereafter, he says we can get up to 4 vapes from one grind this way. This method worked the best I think, the 1st vape was very tasty and full of flavour, the last vape not so but pretty potent. As we were using the vape, the bar lady came up to us and told us we were not using it correctly much to the amusement of the BT who had advised us on the temperature incremental technique.

It is past midnight and we decide one more drink in Barney’s before heading back to the digs, there have been many misunderstandings with Dutch folk over the last few days on account of Excel’s strong and distinct northern English accent. Tonight is no exception to the rule, as we are leaving Excel states he wishes to “purchase” the Parvati Pollen, the BT laughs as the bar lady hands a confused Excel a bottle of pear juice  . We have a laugh with the BT as the bar lady shakes her head at the confusion, Excel cadges a packet of small smoking papers off the BT and we thank them both and leave.

1am and we are back at the apartment and looking at our selection, we need to get through some of this or we will have too much if we want to make purchases from de pijp. Excel is hoping the SLH is like the batch he sampled from there in September 2013! He is not that impressed with the SLH as he doesn’t think it’s as good as he remembered from last year, it doesn't do it for me either :( . Another late night early morning session ensues, Excel is adamant that he wants to try the Parvati in the vape so I show him how hard it is to manipulate once warm. We smear about .25g on to rolling paper and make a cocktail with a selection of the weeds and that finally ends the session as we effectively enter a trance like state.

I put the pollen in the fridge and then I light some incense sticks, can now smell that backflow of sewage gas, yuck  . I look at the clock, wow its 4am, both Excel and I have totally lost track of time. Time for bed. As I tuck myself in and switch off the light I think about the day, another great day and 2 more still to go :D .

Exceluk1:
The idea was to get up around 9 and grab breakfast and then head over to Voyagers for opening, CM had set his alarm so I wake at 10 with a light head wondering whats going on… again am I really here??? Music and kettle on, with no sound of movement I wake sleeping beauty. After a brew and morning smoke we touch base with Padge and arrange to meet later in the day. After a chat with the ladies of the house they will pick up the fresh mint (Mint tea and honey is a great palate cleanser) and an offer of cooking for the house at some point we are straight on the tram and in Voyagers by 11:30.

Voyagers - No SLH so opt for the SSD which had good reports leading up to the trip, it’s busy so we have a quick smoke and walk down to Greenplace. For the life of me I can’t remember a single thing about this place and this pretty much sums up the rest of the day, floaty high without a care in the world. Perhaps some Blueberry for me?!?

We walk back to the apartment to vape and smoke with the SSD being very nice but the NL bringing back memories of early days with its great effect. With provisions to buy we head off to Albert Cuyp market, I love a good market and this one is great for fresh meat / fish. Nothing better than exploring a counties market high. An easy Peri Peri Chicken is on the menu, last trip I made a fish and a chicken Paella for everyone while impressive it took too much of my evening up. Chicken and veg bought I hunt down de peperbol, a quaint cooks store with a great selection of herbs, spices and an amazing selection of teas. Can see CM has no interest in mooching so don’t hang about here too much. Blag a free sample of russian tea which is not stronger than a good english leaf but free is free. As for the love potion it was made up of a wild collection of herbs and could only have made a dead dog taste better at best. As its Valentines day I pick up some flowers for the girls, I have a free pass from the Mrs and need to raise my game. We have some fresh profertjes for the walk back and then pickup some fresh cheese and bread from kaashuis tromp. Ok I’m a fat foody and love it :)

Back in the room and a top up, everything is a blur and no strain is really standing out in the taste department for me. My 1st trip the SLH from voyagers and the honey haze really did blow my taste buds. We meet up with Padge in Barneys a brew and smoke and then back to the comfort of the room. The Valcano in the room is a blessing for flavour and getting the most out of your bud, if I could get my hands on a good smoke back home I would invest for sure. Padge has to make a move so we bid farewell after arranging a full day with him tomorrow around de pijp.

The chicken is put in the fridge to marinade with a good olive oil, paprika and Peri Peri mix (chilly flakes) but could have done with more but didn’t want to blow anyones head off the following day. We head off to grab a slice of cheap pizza of rembrandt square, with the weather setting in we walk back to Barneys and settle in for the evening.

The only thing I can recall is using the valcano here and the mixed instructions on its proper use. The BT being spot on with starting at 175 and jumping up 5 degrees each bag. The 1st bag being a light vape full of flavour to the last at 190 being thick, potent but with a loss of flavour. On exiting I wanted to “settle the bill” and purchase some of the hash, the lady somehow miss heard my perfect english and produced some looza, leaving me puzzled and CM and the BT in stitches. The Parvati Pollen looked like someone had scrapped an orange grease into the tub, the bouquet was fresh and spicy. There was a large oily clump in the corner with my name on it.

We headed back to the room and spent till the early hours working through our stash in different combinations, the best being a double spread of the Pollen with a NL filler. This hash is the best I’ve had. I took it out of the bag and squished it into a small block, sat it on my finger and watched it bend as it warmed then it started to melt a little too much, leaving a my finger coated with a light film of sweet oil :). Lying on the sofa listening to some great tunes and good company, working on Amsterdam time life is good. A toasted cheese sandwich and a good brew, why is weed illegal, we would all be better people for it :) We agree I should set an alarm and CM rolls me a tobacco rollie as I seem to have lost all ability to use my fingers….
