Weed for a beginner

Post by kingconan »

Hey all,

I am going to take your advice and will try to avoid pre-rolled joints next time that I am in Amsterdam. And I promise to avoid Bulldog too ;)

Can I please have your advice on the following;

In the UK I have only ever smoked weed with tobacco and I will probably keep this going. I am a very light smoker here and I am a bit worried about buying weed that's too strong etc.

I have been looking at the greenhouse coffeeshop menu (http://www.coffeeshopmenus.org/Greenhou ... ntrum.html Can someone recommend a good weed to buy from here? Needs to be good for a beginner so not too strong and no anxiety effects etc etc.

Thanks all and if you need any other info please let me know,

-Conan

The Greenhouse might not be the best bet for mild weed, but others might have better suggestions from that menu.

I brought a friend to A'dam a little while back who had never smoked in his life, so he was a bit nervous about getting too stoned. We started by smoking some Blueberry out of a pipe, so we could smoke small amounts and ease into it before smoking joints after.

Oddly enough, after he got a taste for it, we tried Blueberry, Lemon Haze, and Super Silver Haze, he really liked the stronger stuff I bought like Hawaiian Haze and Grey Crystal Hash.

So, maybe try a pipe first for any buds you buy as you can smoke a little bit and then chill out and see how it hits you before you smoke more, rather than smoking a whole joint of something and getting too stoned and not having a good time. And maybe start with something like Northern Lights, Ak-47, White Widow, Blueberry or another medium strength strain before moving on to the Hazes and Kushes from there if you feel like it.

Some places you might check out, just in my opinion for good, mild to medium strains, would be Bluebird, Betty Boop, Abraxas, Anyday and Blues Brothers (which I'll probably get slack for suggesting here ;) but they did have a good blueberry last time I was in town).

Hey KC

With the tobacco thing most coffeeshops really couldnt care but dont leave your pack laying on the table or visible to the budtender, i tend to just cut up equal sized pieces and put them in my box ready to roll with.

If i was you id stay well clear of Greenhouse, Barneys, Dampkring, Hunters, Bulldog, etc. All overpriced and overrated, commercial tourist weed to put it lightly although thats not to say on the odd occasion you will find something nice there but its tooo hit and miss for me personally.

I would recommend Voyagers, Utopia, 1e Hulp, Green Place & Grey Area in that order, especially the first two just for the customer service alone, all staff (green place's staff can bit c**tish at time though) know their menus back to front so just go in and ask them what kind of bud your looking for (desired effects, taste etc.) and they'll point you in the right direction definitely, in these shops they tend to price by strength so strongest at the top of the menu, if i was you id look towards the bottom and work my way up.

Word of advice though, id probably stay away from racy sativa highs, so your high end hazes and what not cause they can give you a very heady high which doesnt help with the anxiety, id go for the more indica dominant strains that give you a relaxing body stone

think you should try a vaporizer....
you won't have the effect of the tobbacco... and you can try a little piece of your choice..

I think I might buy a little wooden pipe, I think I read on here that you could pick one up for about 7 euros or so? Do you touristy shops sell them or would I need to look for a weed accessory type shop?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

Would something like Orange bud be a good suggestion for a first timer? Or maybe White Widow? Seen both of those in Abraxas.

White Widow for sure, never tried Orange Bud but grew up on WW and it's a nice medium smoke that will get you stoned but not over the top.

I have had Orange bud, that was exceptional and strong in the dam, just because it's old school does not mean that it can't be grown and cured properly, ask the bud tender, but most important, ease into it, couple puffs and chill, couple of puffs and chill, before long you will be were you want to be

Where is best to pick up a little wooden pipe? Something I can just throw away after my trip. I'm staying at the Inntel - would it just be a souvenir shop?

I stayed there on my last trip, nice place, good breakfast! Just go out the front door and turn right. In that little alley/street on the left hand side is a smart shop, they sell papers, pipes, truffles etc. The guy behind the counter was cool. Gave me free tips and screens when I bought a pipe and papers/grinder. Nice wooden grinders there as well. About a 1 min walk from hotel.

Cool thing about Inntel is you're right across from Betty Boop, 420 is on the same street, Utopia is a 5 minute walk away and Voyagers maybe 10 mins. So you're right in the heart of things. Abraxas and Anyday are just a block over as well. Fun place to stay!

I would say a good advice would be to talk to the budtender in the coffeeshop that you choose to visit. Explain that you want something that is not too strong and he (or she) will give you a good advice of what to try. After all it's their job to know what they are selling. Giving advice of certain strains is tricky as potency may vary from different batches.

Weed is mentioned but I would also suggest to try some hash. A nice maroc for example (not the most potent type) will get you nicely stoned and since they are mostly made from indicas you will get kind of mellow and relaxed.

The first time I ever tried weed was in Amsterdam, I knew it was something I wanted to do. I was unfortunately brought up believing it was all evil, that was until I learned the truth. So I landed in Schipol and boarded the train on my way into a lovely rainy day :') I checked in and made my way to Siberie (my first coffeeshop) and introduced myself to the lovely female bud tender and said look, this is my first ever try, what can you recommend? She asked me for 3 euros which I gave to her and she rolled something for me. She made a joint which consisted of a tiny bit of tobacco at the start then it was Jamaican import weed for half the joint and the other half was White Widow local hydro so I was told. She said, smoke the first half, see how you feel, if you think you can take it, take the second half, or stop and keep the rest (she made a mark with a pencil). I smoked the first half and enjoyed it immensely, felt no need to use the second half till I had relatively come down that evening. That second sent me to space that evening.

Spending a week in the Dam smoking will send your tolerance up so you could be smoking top shelf by the end. Since your tolerance is low, and if you're going for a while, do an edible for your first experience, buy a 1(g) one and eat a quarter :D
