I have a feeling that the train tickets are good for 24 hours!

I'm not 100% sure but the 24hr thing does sound like the method they use. I bought a (day) return ticket to go to Haarlem at the start of june, and pretty much everyone I spoke to (at the station, in Haarlem and Amsterdam) said that I needn't get the last train back which is after midnight.

Not sure if this helps but it does sound as though it goes by specific hours rather than certain days.

Have a look here! this answers the question.

As far as Valo was concerned (I remember this now from my April trip!!) A return works from the first train to the last one for places like Haarlem so if you brought a rtn from Haarlem - Amsterdam @ 06:00 you could return anytime up to the last train 00:30 (approx)
