Has anyone stayed at any of these hotels?

Post by jase 42 »

I've booked a flight for the 4th to the 8th October but can't decide which hotel to book out of these 3 which have made my short list anyone stayed at either of them Hotel Vijaya, Hotel The Crown, Rembrandtplein Hotel I'm on a budget of £240 and these are within my budget. I'm going alone this time round so am after somewhere central and provides breakfast and own bathroom. Any recommendations would be much appreciated I know this question has probably been asked a lot.

Cheers :D

Hey jase,

I've stayed at the Vijaya many, many times over the years and I have no complaints with the place.

The staff are friendly, the rooms are great value for money considering the location and the fact that you have a private en-suite (in almost all the rooms) bathroom. I only had one room over the last 7 or 8 years where I had to walk a few steps across the landing to my (still private) bathroom (you had a key for the bathroom, but it wasn't actually in your room).

Prior to me finding the Vijaya, I had tried quite a few places in and around the centrum, including the worst place I have ever set foot in in my entire life - Quentin Arrivee. {shudders}

The free breakfast isn't gonna match up to let's say the buffet at the Grand Kras, but it fills a gap - usually a selection of ham, cheese, bread, jams etc with juice, coffee... To be honest, the last few times I stopped there I didn't even bother going down for breakfast, but hey - it's free!

I can't comment on the other places you mentioned, but take it from me - you can't go far wrong here if you're on a budget but don't want to sacrifice some basic requirements like having your own shower and toilet whenever you want them!

My last trip was back in March and my friends and I stopped at Voyagers for the first time - I had booked a twin ensuite room for me and a mate, but he pulled out at the last minute and I swapped my twin room for the Basement Ensuite Double, because A.) Vijaya was fully booked up by then, and B.) my other friends had never been to Amsterdam before and I didn't want to leave them on their own in the hotel. Just as well because I loved it! It was a little more than Vijaya, but damn! We're staying there again next week and I'm having the same basement double again - nice big bed and no stairs to climb!!!

Have fun!

So I'm guessing you recommend the double room then? One question I couldnt find an answer to elsewhere, is there a fridge or any cooking facilities in the room? Had my heart set on an apartment but unless a room comes on airbnb in the next 11 days I'll be staying in the double. I aint fussy at all but I wanted some munch and beers for the room. Any suggestions welcome

You have been posted on the October Whos In Town page.

You can see who else may be in town during your stay.

If you don't see yourself, click your refresh or reload button
Your browser sometimes loads pages from your local cache and
you don't get the latest update.

Watch for Toke & Talks, I post them up to the last minute.

Set yourself up with your own T&T or Toke and Talk, where you pick the coffeeshop
(your favorite) and the date and time, I will post it and you wait for folks to
show up, if they do you'll have a T&T. If they don't you still get to enjoy your
favorite coffeeshop!

By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.

You can do a little practice shopping on the Coffeeshop Menus page.
Any with arrows are less than six months old.

Any nice new menu pictures you can get will be much appreciated.
Always ask first, better told no than thrown out.

Hey Dean - if I was travelling solo, as I often do, and I have enough to afford the extra luxury (for me) of stopping in the double at Voyagers and paying €150 for a couple of nights as opposed to the Vijaya at maybe €120 for a single, I would probably always go for Voyagers...

BUT... I still highly rate the Vijaya for what it is, a simple, basic but clean room which has ensuite singles and doubles, with a free breakfast thrown in. It's very close to Centraal Station and also very close to the majority of my favourite eating and smoking places. Neither hotel has a fridge nor cooking facilities sadly - you could always sling a toastie maker in your luggage and hope you don't set off the smoke alarms with an overdone cheese n ham, but there's a Febo right across the gracht, and several times I have got up out of bed to stroll over the bridge to satisfy some late night munchies.

In fact, the only hotel I can recall having a fridge was Hotel Diann on Raadhuisstraat. Very nice but a bit more money than my usual hotel requirements need.

So yes - the double rooms at Vijaya are very good value for money and I would have no worries in recommending them to anyone who wanted good, basic accommodation without any hassle. One time I was given a double room there when I had only reserved a single, and because they had seen me so many times over the years, I supposed they considered it good customer service to upgrade my room since they had one free at the time. It's little things like that that make me give places my custom.

Paradoxically, despite my total satisfaction with the place, I suspect I will be using Voyagers from now on, if the rooms are available. The service there is top-notch and you can't beat having a coffeeshop like that in the same building!
