Good news/bad news

Post by Lemming »

:D The good news is that I’ve now got a method that should give me access to the server where the forum is hosted. This means that I can finally install bits of software (patches) that enable me to do things like getting rid of all of the spam memberships.

:( The bad news is that Peter wants to close down the server at the end of March. That means I’ll have to find a new home for the forum (this doesn’t affect the main site, incidentally, that’s on a different server).

Hopefully I’ll manage to move it before the end of March. If not the only options are to close it down for a while or pay £40 per month to take over the present server (Peter is providing a bit of space on it for free at the moment). So, please buy lots of t-shirts!

For Techies Only:

The biggest issue for me is actually moving the forum. It’s very big and backups made with phpBB’s own backup utility cannot be restored as a single file. I believe the answer is to use MySQL’s backup utility.

I’m a programmer by profession and familiar with SQL but know little about MySQL or phpBB. If anyone out there can assist I’d be very grateful.

cheers

Lem

Have you considered putting GoogleAds on the site as a way of covering your costs Lem? I dunno how much it would bring in, but this is a popular site, so it should be a bit.

It is a popular site (the main site that is, not the forum) with over 2000 unique visitors every day. Unfortunately, though, the subject matter means that Google won’t advertise on it.

Can I suggest Lem that you backup the db in 2 ways...I always do when I am moving the shops I build....I would suggest creating the backup in txt format and also as an xml file...I also backup locally as well as remotely and then use a comparrison tool to check the backups in case of data corruption through transmission...(belt and braces with me!) the backups that reside on the server can then be ftp'd to you locally and not via http.

I have never had a problem moving a DB (famous last words) and setting it up again providing I use the MySql interface. I am pressuming that you are not changing any tables at the location that you will be moving too.

The only problem that I have had is with the server side version of PHP so I always transfer like to like and then update as necessary.

I don't think you will have any problems but if you need any help just ask and will try to sort it for you...it's hard to think of what "may" happen before it actually has happened.

Mysql

Post by slimline »

Hi Lem and all you others, sorry about the server but it really is costing me money to keep it in running. Lem Have a look at a program called Navicat (simple windows software for backing up Mysql databases), once you have done that run gzip on the server to archive off the directory, simple task of copying gzipped file across to new server and unzip. Then use Navicat to install the MySql database. Done it myself with the forum when i pulled down the original 64bit server. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice and offers of help. I’ll look into the backup issues soon. As for financial assistance for the server, I’ve suggested to Peter many times that he provides a paypal account or similar that we can make donations into but he’s never responded. I guess he may have a paypal account with his email address but I haven’t looked yet. Alternatively, I have a paypal account against my email address. If you put anything in there and let me know what it’s for, I’ll pass it on to Peter.

Hi Lem, I do have an paypal account associated with an email address. lets see if it works!

If the users can cover most of the cost I don't mind, but being disabled and on a fixed income I just find it too expensive.

The cost is 59.99 euro's per month

so are you saying that if donations are made the site will saty where it is? how much money needs to be raised? how much is needed each month to sustain the site?

might be good to cover these types of issues .
