Dutch dealers selling heroin as cocaine to tourists

Drug believed to have killed 22-year-old British visitor to Amsterdam

Dutch police have warned that drug dealers in Amsterdam are selling heroin in place of cocaine to unsuspecting tourists – and that at least 10 people have become seriously ill, including a 22-year-old British man who died in hospital.

They say the heroin is being sold by illegal street dealers in two particular locations, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein, in the centre of the city. It has emerged as a serious concern over the past weeks since the first overdoses were reported by local hospitals.

The capital’s health authority has taken the step of distributing English-language leaflets to budget hotels, nightclubs and bars, warning tourists not to buy from street dealers – and stressing the only legal sources of drugs are “coffee shops” or cannabis cafes.

Interestingly, the problem does not appear to be affecting Amsterdam’s red-light district, where many of the legitimate coffee shops are located – regulating supply of “soft” drugs to an estimated 1.5 million “drug tourists” yearly.

“As far as the police have established, the people who’ve ended up in hospital were trying to buy cocaine on the streets – but they were taken advantage of in a very calculated and dangerous way”, said a spokeswoman for Jellinek Clinics. “They were sold heroin instead, and for inexperienced users it’s very easy to take too big a dose. A cocaine overdose typically leads to heart palpitations but, in the case of heroin, respiratory problems are more common.”

The man who died last weekend was one of two British tourists with suspected overdoses taken to hospital together. One developed breathing problems, was resuscitated and is in hospital, while the second discharged himself.

He was found by police and taken to a station where he too developed respiratory problems and had to be resuscitated. He was rushed back to hospital, where he died. Police liaison officers have been trying to contact his family.

The potentially deadly practice of exchanging one drug for another is a sinister development. Undercover police are working to find the gang."

Well it always takes two. The asshole who sells it and the idiot who just has to get high on some shady street shit. Same persons would probably shove a banana sized suppository up their rear ends, as long as it had some sort of mind altering effect to it.

Two Brits die in Amsterdam after 'accidentally snorting white heroin'

Drug deaths: the two men were found in a hotel room (Picture: Rex)

Two British tourists have died after snorting 'white heroin' sold to them as cocaine in Amsterdam.

The men, aged 20 and 21, were found in a hotel room in the Netherlands yesterday.

The Foreign Office is liaising with Dutch authorities and is "providing consular assistance to the family", a spokesman said.

Police spokesman Rob van der Veen said the bodies of the two men, both from England, were found next to traces of a white powder.

The men's names have not been released by officials.

A post-mortem examination is due to be conducted later this week to confirm the time and cause of their deaths.

"We did a quick test to find out what kind of powder it was. It wasn't cocaine, it was an opiate - in this case, white heroin," Mr van der Veen said.

"We took the sample to the Dutch forensic institute and they found out that the contents of this material is the same contents as other material that we already seized in other cases where people got sick."

He said investigators believe the men were targeted by the same street dealer, or ring of dealers, involved in the death of another Briton last month.

Local authorities have pleaded with tourists to steer clear of street pushers, and since October have distributed warning signs and flyers at hotels and hostels, main squares and at Amsterdam's Centraal railway station.

The pamphlets warn: "The last couple of weeks several tourists were hospitalized with severe health problems after using cocaine bought on the street ... Research has revealed that the cocaine used was not cocaine but white heroin."

They also remind visitors that in Amsterdam "you won't be arrested for taking drugs".

Amsterdam police step up hunt for killer drug dealer - who may be involved with death of East Lancs man

Image
Heroin being sold as cocaine in Amsterdam is thought to have caused the death of 22-year-old Joel McDevitt

DETECTIVES in Amsterdam have stepped up their hunt for a drug dealer who may be involved in the death of a Burnley man.

Police have issued a public alert in the Dutch city after two Britons are thought to have lost their life last week after taking white heroin.

Previously, 22-year-old Joel McDevitt, a former Burnley College student, died after, it is believed, taking drugs in Amsterdam.

One of his friends was treated in hospital as a result of the same late-October incident. Police are linking their collapses to a batch of white heroin currently being sold there.

Drug users are said to believe that the substance is cocaine and up to 17 people, all tourists, have needed medical attention after taking the narcotic.

Investigators are now hunting a dealer who is said to ride a dark-coloured bicycle and frequently targets tourist hotspots.

Last week, two friends from Plymouth — Shaun Brotherston, 20, and Bradley Price, 21 — are thought to have died in their hotel after taking white heroin.

The warning notice, delivered to hotels and placed on noticeboards around the city, reads: “Currently, extremely-dangerous ‘cocaine’ is being sold in Amsterdam.

“Several tourists have been hospitalised with life-threatening conditions after using ‘cocaine’ bought on the street. Three tourists have died. Ignore street dealers.

“Research has shown that the ‘cocaine’ used was actually white heroin.”

Medical advice has been issued with the warning poster, reassuring those in jeopardy that they will not face arrest if they alert health professionals on suspecting someone has taken the drug.

An Amsterdam police spokesman said that the same drug is suspected in the death of another British tourist, understood to be Burnley-born Mr McDevitt."

White Heroin Killing People in Amsterdam

By Mike Adams

First, it seizes up the brain like an old Chevy being driven at full speed through the desert with no fluids; sending a violent message to the spinal cord that cripples the user in his tracks. Then comes the inability to breath properly, followed by 10-20 seconds of remaining consciousness before the brainstem resembles a rubber chicken bone, sending the person deep inside the hole to the otherside without any chance for survival. This my friends is the fierce course of the wrecking ball known as a heroin overdose, a brown drug so powerful it was once used to by the ancient Egyptians to paralyze camels in an effort to prevent them from biting during intercourse.

Imagine the sheer horror felt by three British men last week as they took turns snorting hefty lines of what they believed to be cocaine, only to watch each other drop, one by one, on the floor of an Amsterdam hotel room from an overdose of white heroin.

Unfortunately, while the average human has the capacity to handle mass amounts of cocaine before blowing out his heart, even smaller doses of heroin can prove lethal - a message authorities in Amsterdam are hoping to relay to cocaine crazy tourists who might mistakenly get their hands on the same pale horse that recently killed three strapping young lads.

Police initially thought the men had died, as the result of a bad batch of cocaine because the powder located near their bodies was pure white. However, laboratory tests at the Dutch forensic institute found the drug was, in fact, an opiate. "[In] the last couple of weeks several tourists were hospitalized with severe health problems after using cocaine bought on the street ... Research has revealed that the cocaine used was not cocaine but white heroin," according to pamphlets circulating throughout the city.

Dr. Adam Winstock, founder of the Global Drugs Survey, recently told the BBC that he believed the culprit behind white heroin was a rogue dealer who had accidentally mixed up the two drugs. His theory stems from pure economics alone, as he reveals that heroin is three times more expensive in Amsterdam than cocaine. Fortunately, Dr. Winstock believes the increased media attention surrounding white heroin will cause the dealer to double check his products because ultimately, the mistake is costing him a substantial amount of money. Yet, there is also the possibility that this fiend is dosing people with the wrong dope on purpose.

In addition to the three deaths, there have been numerous reports of people getting seriously ill from white heroin. Dutch police are encouraging anyone who believes they have been sold the wrong drug to contact them immediately. They are assuring the public that they are not at any risk of being arrested. "If people are stupid enough to use and get sick we are not there to arrest them, we are there to save lives. That is our highest priority. If you get into problems, dial 112," said Rob Van der Veen with Dutch police.

Heroin-testing kits for sale, as cocaine killer investigation continues

December 4, 2014

Amsterdam city council is stepping up its efforts to warn tourists about the danger of buying drugs from street dealers following the death of three British tourists last month.

The tourists died after taking what they thought was cocaine but was actually a lethal form of white heroin. At least 14 others have been hospitalised after taking the drug.

The city’s mayor Eberhard van der Laan said on Thursday that test kits to check that cocaine is not heroin will be available in at least 30 of the city’s ‘smart shops’ – shops which sell legal highs and smoking equipment.

In addition, special teams will be on the streets selling the test, which costs €2 each. The options for testing drugs are being publicised on matrix boards, leaflets and via social media.

If anyone is found with heroin, they will be urged to contact the city’s health board.

A team of 20 detectives is investigating the case but a television appeal on Tuesday resulted in few useful leads. Van der Laan said every year some 1,000 street dealers are picked up in the city selling fake drugs.
