Food Worth Flying For: The Best Apple Cake in All of Amsterdam

Image

That croissant in Paris. The char kway teow in Singapore. That cup of hot chocolate in Perugia. This is Food Worth Flying For. In this new series, Jaunted's contributors share the foods they'd gladly fly around the world for (and probably already have).

Don't hate, but we kinda used to have a thing for the cold apple cake with vanilla sauce found in every IKEA cafeteria, no matter the country. It's not a very original preference, especially considering we live in the land of all-American apple pie. Then we went to Amsterdam and everything changed.

Dutch Klassieke Appeltaart is something different; it's a deep-dish slice piled high with more cooked crisp apple slices and less sugary apple glop, encased in a generous crust of brown crumbliness yumminess.

Amsterdam is famous for its Appeltaart (reimagined in US cuisine as Dutch Apple Pie), and the small restaurant Winkel 43 renowned for its own recipe.

Despite its convenient location in the Jordaan district, a quick walk to both the Anne Frank House and Amsterdam Tulip Museum, and its mention in many "must-eat" lists, Winkel 43 is a delightful local find. In fact, we wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for Amsterdam resident/international superstar DJ/frequent flyer extraordinaire/Jaunted contributor Max Graham, who pressured us into a slice, hot and fresh from he oven, with a heaping dollop of homemade whip cream.

I was introduced to "De Winkel" applellflappen about 15 years ago. Back then you didn't have to stand in line for an hour to get some and there was always an empty seat outside. That ended about 8 years ago or so.

Right up the street, Cafe Papeneiland does a pretty good appletaart, too. And the building is really charming and there's usually space available.

Not sure what eating cake in some Italian square has anything do with the post, the title of the post reads "Food Worth Flying For: Best Apple Cake in All of Amsterdam" in case you missed it.

I travel a lot and eat out a fair bit too, a lot of the cafes and restaurants around Rome are aimed at tourists, the food is usually pretty mediocre and overpriced, even if cooked by someone's Granny.

This is the best apple cake/Appeltaart in Amsterdam that I've tasted, and trust me I know my pastry.

I have walked past De Winkel before but didn't go in, I will definitely grab a slice when i next pass by! Ive had some really lovey apple cake/deserts- Tarte Tatin from Holtkamp, Apple cake from Broodje Bert and Appelbeignet from the oliebollen stall around xmas time.

I love Dutch Apple-tart and have tried many different cafes all over Amsterdam.
Whilst Winkel 43's is amongst the very best, the ultimate, in my opinion, is the apple-tart served ay Cafe Villa Zeezicht on Singel canal. Lovely chunks of apple in a crunchy pastry and that cakey topping with loads of cinnamon flavour. Even better when you have it served with cinnamon ice-cream. Lekker!
Honourable mentions must also go to uniquely decorated and cozy cafe Latei on Zeedijk and the cafe inside Concerto record store on Utrechtsestraat. Both have their own recipes and both are very good.
