Decline in Coffeeshop Culture

Post by PotHead »

I was back to Amsterdam in August and November 2015 and noticed a decline in both the number of coffeeshops and in coffeeshop culture. For example, I could not smoke in the Central coffeeshop (Prins Hendrikkade 89); I was asked to step outside. And there are only a couple of Coffeeshops on Wormestraat which once had around 10 shops. Pity to see this decline since first enjoying the coffeeshop scene with a fist full of Guilders.

Luckily, 420, Dampkring and Tweede Kamer still offer the vibe and products I am after. I hope like a pendulum, that we will see a correction in coffeeshop culture and the number of shops in the Centrum area.

There,s huge push toward Dab Bar.s ,now that Rosin is exploiting in the US. That fact it.s totally organic and fact CS can sell water hash in Dam. I believe it won,t be long Dapping rigs will be in every CS in the dam.

things used to be ROCKING in AMS a few years ago… all the shops on waromstraaat are closed down.

baba's was my spot.

gone. :(

now i'm like… ok… where the fuck do I go hang?

haven't been back since 2011… and haven't seen anything good happen to make me really wanna go back.

baba's will reopen in march i think… but like way out in the boonies… past the greenhouse on harlemstraat…

dabs are big here but mostly in CO, and CA… where the shit is legal.

Iv posted before my thoughts on the slow death of the Dam vibe. Back in the late 90's and early 00s there truly was a special magic to the place.

Amsterdam is still a wonderful place but it's not the same. Perhaps I think that because I'm getting older or perhaps I was lucky to visit at the peak. During those years I used to visit 5-6 times a year, u honestly couldn't even guess how many times I visited- a lot or how much money I spent - but it was worth every penny

For me when they started banning things is when it started to loose its magic , sadly the days of being able to buy a beer, top class weed and fresh shrooms all in the same place will never come back. Not that I miss it but even the red light is a pale imitation of its former self. Over all that the message that we aren't quite as welcome as we once were is loud and clear.

That being said- a total fool smashed into back of my car in 2014 and if been pretty much house bound since. If I ever do get fixed then a trip to dam is pretty high on the list. Part of my soul lives there and always will.

Couldn't argee more late 90s early 00s dam was the place to be anything went you could get what you when you want and do what you want a mate of mine used to run the hotel for the coffeeshop la canna had some epic nights in the dam when I used to visit him regularly. But now the scene is totally different how times change if you hadnt been to dam in those years you wouldnt believe the changes over the years. There are still a few good shops left tho as mentioned above will never give up my dam trips tho toke on!!

yeah..Amsterdam in the 90's
what a vibe
it felt like freedom
it was creative
people dressed to express their uniqueness
visited 2 and 3 times a year from the US
i still love the city....but it ain't the same

I think it all began to change after Theo van Gogh was murdered
