I really appreciate to see the forum back, and to see this highly supportive thread. It's been my pleasure to visit The Netherlands annually since 2006. My last visit was to Leiden where I decided it was time to learn Dutch. It's been a gradual process. First I downloaded Pimsleur's free intro on Audible. I can now politely badger a woman about language in Dutch. As I learned audibly, spelling was like a splinter in my mind. Last week my wife and I commenced Basic 1 Dutch at T'Klokhuis in New York. Our instructor is a woman named Anne Marie from Holland.

Pardon mevrouw. Spreekt u Engels?
Nee meneer. Ik spreek geen Engels. Ik spreek Nederlandse. Spreekt u Nederlandse?
Een beetje. Ik spreek een beetje Nederlandse mevrouw.

Vowel combinations remain largely a mystery but we study soon for our lesson again tonight. I have a feeling my Pardon? will kom in handy.

Good initiative. Quick nitpicky advice, "du" is the German pronoun for you (informal), ...in Nederlands het is "Je" of "Jij". Dus bij voorbeeld, "Spreek je Nederlands toevallig?" "Ja Ik kan inderdaad klein beetje Nederlands praten met jou!"

Also last one, Ik "haat" Eduard, is "I hate Eduard"; "Ik heet Eduard" is "my name is Eduard". But you can simply say "Ik ben...(naam)", as we do in English, "...I'm so-and-so, and you are?"

Edit to Add: don't worry I'm sure one of the true Nederlanders on the board will come to correct my own butchery haha...

You can also say this, "Ik snap het/jij niet", or "ik snap het niet wat je zegt", means roughly the same thing

(me on 75% of the oral questions from my instructor at T'Klokhuis)

My favorite part of the experience at T'Klokhuis
are the Dutch and Flemish children and parents
that are leaving when I get there. So cute with
their Amsterdam bicycles ferrying the children
clamoring in Dutch.

Their class is over and they are going home for dinner as my evening class begins
