Mr Incognito goes off piste
Hi all
Just back from another Dutch adventure - this time I had two days and two half days in the Dam plus a day trip to Leiden and a day trip to 's-Hertogenbosch. My last trip report got lost in the hiatus last summer (as well as getting hijacked by someone with forthright opinions who thankfully (IMHO) hasn't reappeared (stings like a butterfly, floats like a .....)).
Apart from a visit to Boerejongens (Utrechtestraat) for some of their White Choco Block, I didn't visit any of the better known coffeeshops. I'll try and write the whole trip up - there's a mini Leiden tour - but it was (as ever!) a bit of a random week! I have some photos (mainly of Leiden), but no bud-porn - sorry in advance for those who like gazing at crystally nugs (phwoor!!).
So, having had my bags packed from Saturday morning, it was 11am Monday before my plane took to the air - KLM from Leeds Bradford. Cheaper than Jet2, and I got a free cake, cup of water and a can of Heineken! Straight through Schiphol on auto-pilot, and onto the train via the Tourist Info stand for a 5 day tram pass. I was staying in the east, so jumped another train to Muiderpoort and was at my Airbnb pad by 2pm. Formalities done, I was straight out of the door and on my way to the closest CS - Happy People at the top of the Dappermarkt.
Happy People - Bio Haze @ 9 Euros, Twizla hash @ 8 Euros. There was a reasonable menu here - much cheaper than Centrum - with most buds in the 10 - 14 Euro range and half a dozen hashes from a 4 Euro Polm up. Friendly enough BT (as if that mattered! - its like when people complain about CS's - I can tell you, any dutch CS is better than my local in the UK, 'cos there isn't one!) I was buzzed through to the smoking area once I had done my purchases. Three groups of people in, plenty of space. Rustle rustle twizzle twizzle slurp slurp puff puff - aaaaahhhhhhh.......
A leisurely stroll back to the flat where I sat in the sun on my balcony enjoying a very happy head rush. The Bio was well cured, smoked beautifully, and combined with the hash to knock my socks off. A pretty good example of a tbisla - fresh, a bit sticky, beautiful golden tinge. I seem to remember a bit of chat with @Papi and others about where I was going to get a bong - in my confused state I had forgotten that every shop in Centrum sells smoking tackle of all varieties!
So after a wash and brush up, I set out for Amsterdam proper. I was after some more hash and first stop was CS Carmona (don't ask me why!) where I got some of their Carmona Crazy Crystal @ 10 Euros. Similar to the Twizla both in style and flavour, but a bit more strength! I wandered from there up to town via Borejongens for some White Choco Block (their menu is looking fine at the moment, but I love this hash) and a random gift shop for a 10 Euro bong! Had a stroll round the RLD then jumped on a tram and headed back to the flat where I cooked up steak & chips and got stuck into my hash collection. WCB was the champion hash of day 1, on goal difference (and maybe because I know it well!).
Crashed out ..... best sleep in months .... roll on day 2.

Re: Mr Incognito goes off piste
No matter how many times I go to Amsterdam, it never fails to hit me when I walk into that first shop – hey, there's a choice! I'm not buying pot luck take-it-or-leave-it from someone who's finally turned up with something allegedly smokable. I can sit at a table with a cappuccino and smoke a mixed hash/weed pipe openly, and maybe read a newspaper or play a game of chess. Sure, it's nice to chat with the budtender if you're both in the mood, but as long as the product is good, I'm not complaining.Mr Incognito wrote:its like when people complain about CS's - I can tell you, any dutch CS is better than my local in the UK, 'cos there isn't one!
Looking forward to the rest, particularly if you're sampling the Boerejongens hash menu. My last trip ever (yeah, I know) is coming up, and I've been hypnotised by that menu for weeks, wondering if there'll be any time for anything else if I try to go through it.

Re: Mr Incognito goes off piste
Thanks for all the nice comments fellow ACDers!
Day 2
I fancied exploring somewhere else - inspired by various reports here on Haarlem, Gronigen, Eindhoven, etc. So I went to Leiden - looks ideal on paper (see the Leiden bit of the ACD megamap - you can find it at the bottom of the Amsterdam Map page on this site). There are 10 shops listed, with a few relatively recent comments, so I thought I'd have a look.
Leiden is a beautiful city - with the oldest University in the Netherlands - and the "museum capital". Its built on two branches of the Rhine, and has canals & everything! It's about 35 minutes on the train from Centraal and costs E9 each way second class. So a day out in Leiden is about the same as an overpriced g of "Amnesia Lemon California Banana Kush" in Barneys.
Anyway, it turns out its just as well that Leiden is the museum capital of the Netherlands and that I've taken a couple of pre-rolls with me, because Coffeeshops in Leiden don't open until 5pm....
A trip round the national archaeological museum, lunch in a nice cafe ("The Real McSoulBurger" for E9 in the Soul Cafe, soundtrack of Curtis, Marvin, the Staples Singers and lots of other top tunes!), a wander round the town, a bit of thumb twiddling and gazing into the distance after smoking aforementioned pre-rolls, and Hey Presto! its 5pm.
My (ridiculous it transpires) plan was to visit them all and do a full review of Leiden as the perfect compact off piste tour. But I didn't make it to all 10..... Here's where I did go (and maybe I'll pick up on the others next time, or someone else can carry on my life's work!
Coffeeshop Joy - doesn't exist any more
Coffeeshop Bebop - not shown on the map, its just up the street from CS Leidseplein. I walked past the door as he was opening, so I had to go straight in! This CS is a semi-fly'n'buy - by that I mean it has no proper seating area, but quite a fair sized stand up and roll area. The very friendly BT was very happy to sell me Charas at E12 and some Thai as mixer at E4.5. The Charas was a bit on the old and dry side, but the real deal, lovely earthy piney taste to it and what they call a cerebral high (although my brain is never that cerebral after several days of smoking lots of dope!). The Thai was also pretty good - not blockweed, not full of sticks'n'seeds, burnt cleanly and had a nice old school flavour to it. I like CS Bebop. Unfortunately the BT would let me photo the menu - "it's against the law" apparently. So I can't tell you what else was available .... but it did leave a warm glow. By the time I had been served, there was a queue of 5 people behind me, so I'm clearly not the only person who thginks this place is OK!
Coffeeshop Leidseplein - 20 yds down the road, this is a proper CS with a smallish seating area. By the looks of things, it used to be a brown cafe, and it has a fine selection of "industrial rustic antiques", as old tat is apparently now known, to keep the eyes busy while you sit and chill. There was already a queue here when I got there - looks like 5pm is Leiden's own version of 4:20 - and a steady stream through the door in the 30 minutes I spent with my Charas E12 and Tbisla E8. Same story with the menu and my hopeless memory, but what I can recall is that it was all old school names on there (I reckon most of the "strains" in AMS are just fancy marketing names for the same, but I always was a sceptic! Back in the day, anything black my man had was labelled Gold Seal, all weed was Thai Stick, etc etc so I just expect all dealers to be cut from the same cloth ....).
Where was I? Oh yes, Leidseplein. Their Charas was fresher, stronger, tastier and a whole load better than Bebop's, I'd say the best imported Charas I've had in the Netherlands. The Tbisla turned out to be pretty good too - similar to what you would get in AMS under that name (and the same price really). Leidseplein is a nice friendly coffeeshop with a lovely view, full of locals who were more than happy to chat. Definitely worth a visit.
Coffeeshop Le Palais - yet again, I had to queue, and had a line behind me when I'd finished. Le Palais is a similar set up to Bebop, more like a pizza takeaway than an Amsterdam CS, with yet another friendly and helpful BT (maybe a benefit of the 5pm start - fewer grumpy BTs!). I got Hya at E9 - it was a toss up between that and a couple of other similarly priced Moroccan's - and some lovely Noprthern Lights also at E9. The bud was a beautiful solid little thing, covered in crystals and cured to perfection. Had the stars shimmering in the sky, and a proper old school flavour to it. Yum! The Hya was fresh and oily, pliable and tasty. A nice imported Roccy that didn't disappoint. I liked Le Palais too!
It was all going so well - lots of friendly people, a whole load of good hash, a lovely bit of old school bud.... On to de Eerste Kamer. Oops.... There was quite a line in here, again nowhere to sit down, so I waited my turn. I ordered a couple of g's of two hashes, and halfway through serving me the BT says "I bet you don't have any ID with you" - as I'm in my 50's, I don't expect to get asked, and I didn't have my passport with me. "Aha, then I can't serve you. Next!" The guy seemed relieved to have an excuse not to sell me any hash... Maybe I've just been lucky to have never had this reaction before, but I don't think he was very impressed with a tourist turning up in his shop.
Anyway, by this stage I was pretty blasted, and next thing I knew I was on a train on my way back to Centraal. Legs had gone into autopilot and my head was phased by being refused a purchase. So the relative delights of Groene Woud, Relaxed, Coffee & Dreams, Double AA, Paradise and Stop'n'Goa will have to await another trip.
Overall, I'd say Leiden is well worth a visit, but don't go until early evening and make sure you have ID! Prices are pretty much what you pay out of Centrum, and there are some good examples to be had! The trains run every 15 minutes until midnight, and then hourly right through the night, but the coffeeshops shut at 11pm. Its small enough to easily do a CS crawl, but the only place I came across where you can sit down and smoke was Leidseplein (although I understand Relaxed also has a seating area). My top recommendations are the Charas from Leidseplein and the Northern Lights from La Palais.
Anyway, autopilot took me all the way back to my cozy pad and before I knew it I was out on my balcony with a nightcap and a fat doobie. Heaven!
More to come .... (and some photos, if I can work out how to post them (and don't say "google is your friend" cos I tried that and it didn't tell what to do once I'd uploaded an image ....))

Day 3
So Wednesday dawns and its another leisurely breakfast this time enjoying a big fat doobie of thai grass with charas. What a way to start the day! I watch the Dappermarkt being set up - I love work - I could watch it all day!
A bit more culture today - a trip round the van Gogh museum. My Museumkaart cost me a hefty E60, but it does let me waltz up to the front of the line and straight in! I easily saved E60 in entrance fees from my various visits, and I reckon its worth it. Mind you, its now sat in my wallet home in the UK when someone else could be using it - its valid for a month...... I've never done the vG before, not least because the queue is always so long, and I really enjoyed it.
I head off from the gallery to Yo Yo, seeking out some of their outdoor delights. I nabbed a E10 baggie of Frisian Dew - 1.4g, so not bad value. And it smokes beautifully, tastes lovely, and sets me up for a nice wander round the RLD. I don't remember going there, but there's a g of Amnesia Haze from Goa in my collection, so my stroll must have taken me down Kloveniersburgwal. Apparently it cost me E14. Amnesia haze always does this to me! So it must have worked I guess!
I end up back at the flat late afternoon, and roll up a couple to take to Browerij't Ij where I sink a natte, a zatte, and an IPA. I love their beer! Its not the warmest day, but its still so good to be sitting outside the windmill with a finely crafted ale and a tasty spliff. If only the average UK beer garden was this civilised (not that I've never sat in one with a tasy spliff!). Their bar snacks are pretty good too - a grilled sausage and a plate of cheese hits the spot nicely.
Back home for a snooze - all this dope and excitement is taking its toll! - before a trip over to Kashmir Lounge, via the Kashmir CS where I score some Gerdala at E10 and a g of "high grade Jamaican". This turns out to be that rum soaked weed you get from time to time, and very tasty it was too, although at E8.50 (or something around that) you would hope so! There was a really good DJ doing his thing in Kashmir lounge and I hung around for an hour or so drinking the beer and knocking back the Jamaican, which was actually pretty good. Again, I wish I could sit in my favourite music bar doing this in the UK without constant fear and paranoia! Maybe one day .....
Back to the flat, and I get stuck into my hash pile. I'm enjoying the Hya I got yesterday in Leiden, served on a bed of Frisian Dew. I watch the first two episodes of Lexx and crash.
Day 4
Its my trip to 's-Hertogenbosch to see the Jeronimus Bosch today. Breakfast on the balcony watching the market doing its thing all over again, with the Northern Lights from Leiden being an admirable wake'n'bake, and I head of to Centraal to get the train. I'm sitting upstairs watching the Dutch countryside fly by - its about an hour to den Bosch, which is a beautiful place (even if they have the Wietpaas). Thankfully @spidergawd has alerted me to the need for a plan B on the smoking front, and I have a pocket full of ready rolls to get me in the appropriate mental state for the amazing work of Jeronimus. The exhibition is amazing - I don't think there's any tickets left though. I've been an admirer of his paintings since I was a child - I could look for hours at the detail in the Garden of Earthly Delights, or the Haywain triptych, or any of the other 20 paintings they have assembled here. It is very crowded though, and after a coupole of hours, I have to get out into the fresh air again. Improved through culture, I jump back on the train and head back to the real life version!
I spend the evening tackling hash mountain and grass-wain. All I can say is that dope gets me stoned. And lots of it gets me very stoned!

Day 5
Last full day in town, and I spend it slowly! A final coffeeshop visit after breakfast - to the Smoke Palace which is a short walk from the apartment. This is a big shop with an even bigger outside seating area (at the front on the pavement). In summer, I reckon this place would be a great place to chill on a warm day. I bought more hash - the Special at E10 and the Nepal at E9. Special is a nice piece of Moroccan hash, stoney and tasty, and quite dark. The Nepalese is a soft black - softer than it ought to be so probably some added oil of some sort - which also has a good spicy flavour and a nice, if not very longlasting, high. Smoke Palace deserves more research, I say. Its pretty well connected - close to Tram stops for the 9, and the 3 and 7 - with the Oosterpark just over the road and some nice bars nearby.
Back to the flat for the first bit of packing, a diversion to the Post Office to send home the things I don't want in my hand luggage, and then on to the Tropenmuseum to while away some hours with the help of my remaining weed - thai + jamaican + northern lights + frisian dew - which is now combined into a pile of Js. My evening is wiled away getting those down my neck!
Day 6
Time to go home. After yet another leisurely morning watching the market setting up, sipping coffee and enjoying the end of my stash, I tidy up the flat, leave the keys on the table, and head off to town. I leave my bags at the storage place next to Batavia - it was something like E4 for a day's safe keeping - and head off, museumkaart in hand, with my last 3 ready-rolled. The first of those goes in Batavia itself, enjoying an early afternoon chill and a gaze at the canal. Then a wander down Damrak, a boat trip, and a visit to the Marc Chagall exhibition in de Nieuwe Kerk. Pick up my bags, jump on the train, and before I care to know it, I'm making my way back through Schiphol and home.
So to summarise, and in no particular order:
Weed bought
Frisian Dew, YoYo
Northern Lights, Le Palais (Leiden)
Amnesia Haze, Goa
Bio, Happy People
Thai, Bebop (Leiden)
High Grade Jamaican, Kashmir
Hash bought
Special, Smoke Palace
Nepal, Smoke Palace
Hya, Le Palais (Leiden)
Twizla, Happy People
White Choco Bloc, Boerejongens
Gerbera, Kashmir
Charas, Leidseplein (Leiden)
Tbisla, Leidseplein (Leiden)
Carmona Crazy Crystal, Carmona
Charas, Bebop (Leiden)
I'll review the hashes properly in due course .....
I'm doing the hard work on the hash report as I write. Its the heavy lifting thats always the most satisfying bit!
I don't want to prejudge what I have yet to try, but I can say that CS Leidseplein is well worth a visit if anyone is in Leiden. Their Twizla is actually a real hard hitter and its 8.50 a g. The Charas from there was also very good but a much heftier E12.
Carmona's Crazy Crystal hash is also well worth a try - I'm very happy to have scored 5gs for E45. Its a real belter of a sativa high - you know that wide eyed grinning effect! - and a longlasting hit. And White Choco Bloc is as good as ever - I did mean to get some of Boerejongen's Amnesia Bloc, but they had sold out - always a good sign, but a shame for me.
Another tip is the Gerbera (or whatever it is called - boy was I trashed by Tuesday evening!) from Kashmir. I was in two minds about the wisdom of buying the last g of this he had - it could have been dried out rubbish - but it turned out to be really strong, oily dark moroccan with a great flavour in the Flowermate.

Carmona Crazy Crystal - E10 per g, or 5g for E45
Firm, but pliable. Softens in the hand, this has a slightly grainy texture and a traditional Roccy smell. By that I mean a hint of citrus, a pit of pine, and the taste of mountain earth. It smokes well in a joint, vapes with a good cloud, but goes best in a pipe or a bong. The hit is a sativa lift, coming on quite slowly and rising to a real heady, creative high which lasts well. One of my favourite hashes of the trip.
