Thanks a lot, I'll have a look.

When looking at buds look for tricomes. For example Grey Area puts their buds in a tumbler before selling to get all the good tricomes off for their hash. Now they can sell it twice the crooks! The buds will look like sand paper was taken to them. Otherwise just go with your gut. If you love been smoking your whole life you gotta know a good bud from a bad bud by looking/smelling/feeling even if you never knew the name of the strain.

I'd love to see the pictorial evidence, got any photos?

Wow, that is dodgy behaviour. So sad.

That's a fair point about going with my gut. I have always just based it on what is vivid - colour and smell. Does it look like it has life in it rather than been processed to death? Obviously try to avoid stems, seeds and anything like mold etc. But when you have only smoked what you can get (other than the odd trip to Amsterdam) it is difficult to know if you've ever had anything of proper quality to refer to. So I suppose I'm just trying to learn a few things to cover any gaps I may have in my experience. But as I said before, I do tend to overthink stuff. Even so, I'm looking at this as a kind of fun learning experience.

Thanks for the link but maybe I should have worded my question differently, if this happens as a matter of course at GA someone must have some pictorial evidence?

Any locals want to chime in here, they would be in the best position to provide the evidence?

Don,t think Grey crisytals is made of pixie dust :D The bud tenders always smoking concentres ,butter and everything made from shake.Only weed joints are those big thing they role on 420 :D It's not rocket science there's money in owners having shake box, plus most tourists can,t handle full strength any way . No pictorial ,just what I have noticed . I myself add hash to everything so I,m not disappointed with quality of weed in Dam.

I have to see to believe it , just in my nature, you make some valid points but without actual evidence it's just hearsay.

I found bud tenders in The Hague quite much better then in Amsterdam , there are very good in advice and they know where they are selling.

I have read a little about genetics, and I get that each plant is the product of inherent and environmental variables. I understand that plants have a sort of spectrum of possibility regarding the characteristics they will eventually display, rather than a definitive, fixed point they will all head for like clones.

What I don't get is how that will help me when I'm looking at a coffeeshop menu. It seems that, until I make a choice, buy some weed, test it for myself and see how it works with me, I'll be a bit in the dark.
I think you already have a better understanding of the abject nature of cannabis reality than most my friend. Follow your nose - report back. :)

Oh and this stuff about grey area shaking the trichomes from their products before sale is in my opinion - absolute nonsense. Sorry redeyezman, you're entitled to your opinion of course - but I simply don't accept it as the case. I've seen a few buds in my time and bought a lot of grey area product over the years. Their quality is up and down like everywhere but they most certainly do not remove trichomes before sale. I think I may have spotted that if it was the case.

I'm quite prepared to accept that they may have sold a fair few beaten up buds as has every CS in the Netherlands, but given my experiences in the shop over the past decade or more I refuse to believe that claim.

As stated by someone else - evidence please?

I've also found many budtenders in town to be knowledgable and helpful. It's as much about your approach and expectations. Of course there's the odd arsehole out there. They are after all human :)

I have no evidence whatsoever, but I would very be surprised if at least some of the shops don't do it.
Maybe not in front of customers, but before the bud is displayed.
If they do it lightly, they get plenty of shake and the vast majority of customers would never know it happened.
BTW, I'm generalizing, not talking about Grey Area specifically.

Thanks for that, some good news. Any particular ones come to mind?

Cheers again, I'm feeling a bit more confident about it after the help from this thread and a bit of wider reading. I'll certainly report back.

Thanks True Playa. It's a real shame that budtenders don't generally seem to give much of a service. I suppose I had a vision of a load of obsessive, knowledgeable enthusiasts who were happy to be working in the area they loved and were keen to pass on experience and knowledge. There was a certain idealistic comfort in that naivety :( . But at least I now know what to expect.
You are clearly an intelligent person, just look at the weed and if it jumps out at you, buy it! If it doesn't, don't. That's probably as simple as it gets :D Just don't be afraid to ask the budtender to look at everything, and then walk away if none is good enough. I did that a lot on my last trip!
How many strains do i rip on the daily...

Cheers. I feel more confident about doing that now. Thanks to this thread I've got an idea what to expect and some clue about how to get what I'm after.

 You've all been very helpful.
