Dagreisje door Nederland. Day Tripping around the Lowlands (Den Haag & Leiden)

Post by Nuggz »

Taking advantage of unemployment and a soon to expire railpass good for the whole country, inspiration to take a little excursion through this country which I've called home for some 2+ years now.

Around noon I make for Centraal from the Keizersgracht. Tentative itinerary - Down to Den Haag to give the much lauded Dizzy Duck a go. They test their weed both for cannabinoids and contaminants, and make said results directly available to clientele, in the name of furthering transparency in the industry (allegedly). Then after that onward to Leiden to take in its picturesque scenery and maybe give a go at its own CS-circuit with "High Society" which is the other one along with Dizzy Duck (where I'm currently sat typing this), that offers these detailed test reports to customers.

Anyway 12:30 train's pulling off from Centraal. I realize that despite my previous misunderstanding of the pass's validity on the "hi-speed", I don't need a supplement-ticket unless I specifically take the line going between Schipol & Rotterdam, phew! Frugal boner popped! That in mind, I contemplate adding an additional stop to my trans-Holland trek - hmmm perhaps Utrecht, an oldie but favorite, I note this line passes through Haarlem (and Leiden as well) on the outbound journey so I can add Haarlem without to much fuss. But part of me is thinking another new city maybe Hoorn – pics show her to be a lovely little quaint typical Dutch fishing-village. Blue Tomato (an Amsterdam Genetics affiliate) is also in that town so certainly an option.

50 minutes later I've arrived at Den Haag Centraal. Google maps tells me it's a 30 minute hike from the station to DD, a bit cumbersome but I've only superficially acquainted myself with the Dutch functional-capital - so I opt for the ole shoelace express and hoof it! It's a mildly cold and overcast day, how Dutch. The city itself is clean, well preserved with the typical elements of Dutch architecture, less canals and more chain-businesses – globalization you cunt! Still a sight prettier than your average American city/town but nothing to write home about for a Dutch town to be honest.

At last I've arrived at the DD, that I've heard oh-so-many rave reveiews about. I take a look at few different strains, before settling on Fire Alien Kush, for 13 per gram (most expensive on the menu, everything else is ranging from 8.50-10.50 per gram, well weedwise). The smoking room is fairly small (not grey area but smaller than Paradox, for perspective). The FAK is not super dense, darker with ample light orange pistils, a faint mentholated smell of camphor/lip-balm, a grape jam, with some woody-earthy notes. Definitely different, but alla old-school indica smelling. Test results indicate a THC-content of 16.33%, oh more on that – each bag comes with a little slip of paper with strain name, cannabinoid breakdown (THC/CBD) and a QR code you can with your phone for the whole analysis report of each strain (there's also a batch number on the slip). Didn't scan the code yet, but cool concept nonetheless.

More on FAK, vapes really lush and distinct fruity-earthy flavor in the Volcano. She's more potent than her test results would suggest in a pure joint too, nice enough flavor. Tastes better in the vape, but hits harder in the joint. Solid smoke, given their prices for everything else on the menu though, I feel a euro or two could be knocked off the price to make it a bit of a better value – but I've certainly had a lot worse for the price...

Back to description of interior, nothing to write home about either. There is a volcano and verdamper available for use much to my amusement, points there! The volcano bag is of the "solid-valve" set and they cut the balloon to petty limpdick sized portions, not amused! Still works though, so less complaint. I awkwardly posture myself up at a fuller communal table waiting for a better spot to clear up. Eventually a better spot on the table's "booth", with two electrical-sockets below opens up, so I make haste and snatch it up!

After about a half-hour of annoying the whole rookruimte with my back-and-forth pacing movements to the volcano, getting my smoke gear out, setting up laptop and phone charger. I finally get settled, just in time to con my wallet into taking another visit to the counter to inspect some more wares, I land on the Dyna-Bubba for 10.50 euros per gram, not sure of genetic background, will try and inquire. Have not tried (first-glance whiff brings up notes of meatyness, overripe/rotting melons (among other fruits) and earthy-wood), but instead opened up this travelogue. Typed out a novella thus far, so plan is to wrap it up here, trek back to the station and make for Leiden. Will update when there hopefully.

Overall Dizzy Duck does indeed offer some of the best value to quality I've seen in a Dutch CS (on the same tier as Boerejongens & the Stud for value)

Be crispy stoners!  8)

Update - Pt. II

After closing out my travelogue, I make haste to skin up some of my newest purchase "Bubble-Dyna" (a bubblegum cross IIRC). She's much more aesthetically appealing then the FAK. And once ground even smells a tad funkier as said meat, melons, subtle spice and earthy lumber come through.

Make some gezellig convo with my table neighbor a Mexican expat, offering me some company and a chance to brush up mi español. After we both skin our joints we day our adieus and exit promptly

The grey overcast has evolved into a perpetual dreary drizzle - LEUK! Oh Holland so predictable. I hoof it toward the station a steady trek, 20 minutes later I grab a road snack from the Smullers in the station and board the train for a quick 10 minute zip up to Leiden.

Arriving in Leiden, first impressions as expected a gorgeous little town. Not unlike a scaled-down Amsterdam (or perhaps a scaled-up Haarlem) the city is quaint with decidedly its own vibe.

The drizzle has let up (somewhat) so I pull out my prerolled jointje of Bubba-Dyna and take in the sceney. Wandering along the main gracht I note ubiquity of boat-terraces pervading the cafes on this drag. It's as if one summer somebody decided boat terraces were the coolest thing ever, and it stuck. Not a bad thing by any stretch (espcially aesthetically) but more of a comparative note to Mokum, where such terraces are undoubtedly less prevalent.

The BD transfers quite nicely from bag smell and burns smooth white ash. I prefer the flavor of this to the FAK no doubt, however despite the purported THC content of 18.6% it does not pack the same punch, effect-wise, as the FAK. Still for the price some bangin', well-grown funk fer sure!

A little handy Google research has helped me locate a nice bruincafé "De Bonte Koe" die is echt WEL GEZELLIG (a truly cozy ambience)! Alas after some wandering, I've located my café so I tuck in with my travelogue and biertje awaiting the daunting 17:00 coffeeshop rule in Leiden so I can make for High Society in search of more dankness. Signing off again for now, one love!

(continued). Appetite for some suds sated, I pack up and move on and out from De Bonte Koe.

It's just over 30 minutes until High Society opens so I mosy around the quaint center. There's a hill with a sentry/tower of sorts near the pub so I explore it and take in some very, very partially, unobstructed views of the city.

Moving along I finally arrive at HS, with 10 minutes still to go until opening-time, so I mosey around the block once and by the time I've made my rounds the cannabis faithful have already begun forming a line outside.

And, as if on cue, the shutters come up and the door swings open. It's a very Buy N' Fly type joint, but the menu presentation is nice. They have a binder with a page for each profiled strain on their menu. Very similar to what I've seen at Katsu since about a year ago, if any others on here are familiar with that.

From the get-go their menu draws me in a bit more than DD's albeit pricier (one 9€ strain, everything else ranging from 12-14 per gram).
I see 24k & Sour Tangie at the top of the menu and zero in immediately (lost in a Tangie tangent), they both smell amazing in the tub. (Tangie is perhaps my favorite strain)

I take 1g of 24k (14€ per g) & 1.5g of S. Tang @13€ per g. The 24k is stankyer. Have to say I've encountered seemingly every 24 pheno from neither parents present in aroma, to super Tangie-dom bouquet (the latter moreso recently) but never have encountered one that so beautifully encompasses both parents in its bouquet. Lots of lime/tangerine/lemon fizz (fanta), with some heavy chemmy, musty, diesel from the kosher.

The Sour Tangie is even more of all those fizz notes mentioned above, seductively sweet and sexy. I pocket the 24k for later and make to skin up a pure cone of the Sour.

I take in the shop the line continues to grow unabated, lots of coming and going. Business is uh-boomin'. I finish twisting up my jointje and invite it outside to take in grachten and streetlights with me.

I spark up the Sour, first pull and immediately a potent grind-inducing sativa rush washes over me me accompanied by a divine tickle of the palate, oozing tangie flavor, hastily prompting me to rush back to snag just one more g of ST, not even a full minute departed. I make small convo with the BT while ringing up at the counter. Nice guy and has a very knowledgeable demeanor – staff here seem to know their shit. Good to see! ETA: also checked out a few other, their OG Kush, Obama Kush, Sour D & Cali Gold. The Obama looked nice, peeped it when I came back for more Sour Tang (just in case it was more tempting) and the BT recommended Cali-G which was meh to my nose, as were the Sour D and OG. The Obama Kush however, was very interesting bouquet and I almost skipped topping off my Sour Tangie for it, but I realized I get so many indicas from CS Canalside that maybe some more Sour Tang would do the palate better!

Packed up for real this time, I'm out for some more joints under the streetlights of Leiden and a cheeky beer or 2 more at De Bonto Koe before boarding train back to Mokum. Having nixed Haarlem after a heavy blow to the ole wallet in HS. Over n out! More to come...

You should check out Sumatra in Leiden. Best Indonesian I've ever had!

Great report, by the way. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you to find a good job.

Thanks man. Sumatra was on the potentials list but my time management was quite muddled today and I've had quite a bit of Indonësiche here in Mokum lately so I held back for today.

Alas final update Indeed, skipped out ob Haarlem and rode the line all the way back home to Amsterdam.

Still feeling a bit of the social/wander bug upon arrival I decide for a night cap at Batavia, a few dabs, a lekker salade, and good vibes watching the world go by as best it can here in magnificent Mokum.

De Lekkerste Nuggets signing this one off for good. Will edit my original entries later for clarity and detail, for now stay crispy ACD faithful. Over n out!

Smoked through more.

All smokes bought today were up to scratch. The High-Society, Tangie-based strains were particularly nice.

Gave the 24k a go in the volcano, and it may be the most potent of the bunch (though have yet to vape the ST, so can't say for sure). 24k comes through potent, with a full-bodied flavor that stretches several "bags" long. Smelling it more now, I definitely pick up more Kosher than Tangie, which is still new with regards to 24k phenos I've encountered – as stated this is the "truest" 24k pheno I've found thus far. I'll have to smoke more to give it a better assessment (alas I only copped 1g :( ). Also vaped the Bubba-D which came through astoundingly more potent in the Volcano, and really packs a tasty punch.

Verdict thus far, DD & HS are certainly among the top-tier of Dutch Coffeeshops for value, product and service (both could have better smoking ambiences but alas can't appease everyone now can ya?!).

Today

Cities visited:

- Den Haag

- Leiden

Coffeeshops visited:

- Dizzy Duck

- High Society

Weed bought:

- Fire Alien Kush 13 per g (DD)
- Bubba-Dyna 10.50 per g (DD)
- 24k 14 per g (HS)
- Sour Tangie 13 per g (HS)

Albert Heijn, Kruidvat & Hema to my knowledge all periodically do limited offer specials on NederSpoor (NS) rail-passes. Typically they cost anywhere from 12-20 euro and are good for one travel day. You can use all NS trains, except the Intercity direct – emphasis on direct because that is specifically the hi-speed line going between Amsterdam Centraal, Schipol & Rotterdam Centraal, you can use it on IC direct and even DB ICE trains but you have to buy a supplement ticket for an extra couple of euros. They're not always around, but the seem to come around seasonally early and late summer from what I've seen thus far... who knows maybe one of the other big Dutch chain-stores will run a similar special soon. I'm sure the Dutchies on the forum could better inform you about how often these tickets become available throughout the year...

Some offers are only available if you've got a Dutch address. I have a vague memory of seeing a Hema one that wasn't, but I've forgotten the details.

I've been kicking myself for missing Dizzy Duck on my one visit to den Haag, but hadn't realised it was so small. For ambience, you can't beat Cremers, not even in Mokum, and though I haven't been there since they banned all smoking in the main bar they can't have ruined it entirely. Also, can any stoner visit the city and not go to the Escher Museum? Leiden's still on the bucket list, so glad to read about it.

I think the ones you get in the mail for being a "NS Rewards Member" or something of the like, you have to a Dutch address even to receive obviously – in stores though (especially the ones mentioned) I can scarcely imagine such a bureaucratic prerequisite being enforced...

Thanks Nugs, that is one awesome day trip and a great live report! :D

Should really give one of these a go, so far Haarlem is the furthest we have ventured from Mokum...

ST and 24k sounds amazing, as does the BD, good value also for such top gear! :)

Wouldn't mind getting in to some of them indicas from canalside either, miss 'em!

Thanks, your post had me doing a little search  and found you can buy a one day rail pass for 19 euro as part of your "Holland Pass" https://hollandpass.com/add-ons-extra-s or 54,80 euro by it self :D

Now you have to go back to the M C Escher museum

I have been looking at the list of offers on the NL site. And it is a thing of wonder, oh yes.

The main deal of the month appears to be cheap Thalys tickets to Paris, which probably won't benefit anyone here (but you never know). But something is announced for 9 November. What? Where? They're not telling you yet, so keep watching. Or not. http://www.treinreiziger.nl/internation ... ijs-147794
