Hello fellow lover's of amsterdam , im bringing my mam to amsterdam next weekend , just looking for any tips that you guy's might have regarding cool place's to go , have any of you's brought your parent's over and what did you do ? Not really coffeeshop related place's but maybe nice place's to drink and eat , the usual touristy thing's that i never get around to do would also help , so far i think we will do the canal cruise , beijinhof ,zandvoort , haarlem , anne frank house , if there is anything you can think of i would really appreciate it

For time of year and enjoyment of non-Amsterdam sites (other towns), I recommend to nix Zandvoort/Haarlem and do instead Utrecht/Leiden. If you planned to do Haarlem and Zandvoort in the same day (easy logistics because one of the Zandvoort lines passes through Haarlem I believe), it's still possible to finagle Utrecht and Leiden into one day with some careful planning, but a safer alternative would be Haarlem/Leiden as they're on the same line headed toward Den Haag. But Zandvoort in February, don't really see it being too worth it (IMHO).damagedagain wrote: ↑Wed 1st Mar 2017 09:37 am Hello fellow lover's of amsterdam , im bringing my mam to amsterdam next weekend , just looking for any tips that you guy's might have regarding cool place's to go , have any of you's brought your parent's over and what did you do ? If you get nice weather and you want a beach-esque vibe take the ferry to Noord and go to Pllek, that's a really cool place to go for lunch (I like their lunch-menu better than their dinner-menu) that has a sort of artificial beach terrace going on.
Other places for drink/food:
1. Cafe Brecht - a "berlin" themed cafe, that looks like a quirky antique living room in a way. They serve a great selection of German beers as well as teas, and small snacks.
2. Roest - another sort've beach themed bar, that is pretty cool. Although for your mom and the time of year I reckon Pllek is better (other similar bars to the two, that are more centrally located are Waterkant & Hannekes Boom).
3. Bakers & Roasters - a local favorite for hipsters to get unique brunch-fare. Inspired by Brazilian and Kiwi food staples, gives a nice twist.
4. Brouwerij 't Ij - shouldn't need much explaining.
5. New King - excellent Chinese food in the heart of Amsterdam's Chinatown.
Have lots more I can offer but that was some mainly less mentioned ones I felt like including.

Cafe DeReiger Nieuwe Leliestraat 34 great restaurant
if your only in town for a weekend, two nights I would stay in Amsterdam especially if it's your mom's first visit. Museum pass would be good if weather doesn't cooperate. Our Church in the Attic (a museum in the RLD) is a good way of explaining Dutch tolerance and it's a cool place to visit

Volkshotel is also a really cool spot to look into, just on the southeastern fringe outside of the center. Say 12 minute metro to Centraal station; 20 minutes walking, 10 minutes biking to Rembrandtplein. Cool rooftop bar and hotubs, awesome chic - smart decor.damagedagain wrote: ↑Wed 1st Mar 2017 06:37 pm Thank's very much for all the input , ye i think staying in the city to show my mam around will be the plan i'll do the beach another time , the beijenhof and the church in the attic would be a great way to start then maybe anne frank and a canal cruise , i'd say if we get to see that much aswell as let's say my favourite part of amsterdam my mam will be well happy , staying in the ink hotel this time , my brother said it was a brilliant hotel , dont think my mam could do the stair's in voyager's![]()

Don't forget the obvious -- Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk, and the Van Gogh Museum. Another area that your mam might like is De Negen Straatjes or ‘The Nine Streets!’ Lots of trendy shops to window shop!!
If your mam is into interior design then Willet-Holthuysen and the Van Loon Museums might be of interest. You get to see how the rich people lived back in the day (17th and 18th centuries).

Re: Bringing my mam to amsterdam
Maybe it's just me being precious, but whenever I see a random list of places to visit and The Anne Frank House is just chucked in there with the zoo and the sex museum etc. I wince. For such a true and tragic remnant of wartime Amsterdam it seems to me that its a place for some sober reflection both before, during and most certainly after a visit but I don't know how many people visit other than to queue round the block, slowly shuffle through the house, quick selfie and tick it off the list. Bit like The Peace Palace in the Hague, really annoyed with all the loud, mouthy tour guides totally destroying any chance of quiet contemplation while shepherding their coach parties round for their fast visits. I think these places deserve more respect
If she likes ships there's a brilliant diesel ship engine museum North of the river Ij. They even fire one of the big buggers up now and again. Magnificent.
Diesel heads in this queue please.
Seriously you can hardly turn round in Amsterdam without bumping into something historic (could be me if I'm there) and fascinating. There's the amsterdam museum www.amsterdammuseum.nl/en for some good basic knowledge of the city, there is the diamond museum if you like baubles, and don't we all? What about the Ajax experience? Boat trips are great especially after dark, beautiful. Have a great time. Peace Spider.

Oh yeah, almost forgot 1e hulp, moonrocks, Larby sort you out man. Tram 17 before you ask. Seriously have fun and buy ticket or tickets online before you go to the places. You can do it the same day if you haven't decided what to see in advance and download etickets to your phone, less back aching queueing and some places it'll even save you a couple of euros. Big win.

I hear ya. If that sticks in your craw, you'd puke all over yourself at the hordes of grinning japanese tourists posing for thumbs-up smiley-happy photos at.........Ground Zero. I avoid going there whenever I'm in NY nowadays, the total lack of decency and respect from so many people sickens me.spidergawd wrote: ↑Wed 1st Mar 2017 09:43 pmMaybe it's just me being precious, but whenever I see a random list of places to visit and The Anne Frank House is just chucked in there with the zoo and the sex museum etc. I wince. Incidentally, a good alternative to the Anne Frank Huis is the Resistance Musuem. Its never very busy (a major plus for me), the exhibits are IMO more interesting than at AFH, and you get a broad experience of how the whole city suffered during WWII rather than just focusing on one aspect of the story...
