You can get away with smoking a pipe in the bathroom in most places. Spliffs are like mini smoke machines.

Just back an hour - stayed in "The Abba" - Monday to today for 135 Eurs for bright , rear single room with shower.

Standards great , warm , clean and comfortable - friendly young staff and no problem too small. Dining room has had a makeover and the new Ginger cat is friendly .

Room cleaned every day - spotless anyway - and the breakfast is decent , simple and enough variety. Great coffee.

Tricky to get bookings - high number of Italians and Spanish (of some mixed ages too) , so leapt in when I could. Nice break and may write something up later - always good to come "home" nice and mellow , knowing you can have a nightcap and a spliff in your own room.

(always amuses me when you look up at the hotel and see a good number of open windows , whatever the weather.

Hotel International. As Voyagers was full. 100% smoker friendly they just ask smoke by open window. Got the deluxe double ensuite €300 for 3 nights. Huge room with seating area looks like a 70’s porn set lots of brown leather. Anyway nice staff with bar downstairs good alternative if my usual hunts are full.

Both Flying Pig hostels have common smoking rooms and believe you can find private rooms if you don't wanna share in a dorm. Better than Voyagers price wise.

Do they still have "roach motel" (they check in - but cannot check out" adverts on the subway.

Light hearted comment BTW..

Booked Hotel deals Westertoren for March, they offer the option for a smoking room, I've not stayed there before just wondering if anyone has?

If so, by smoking room do they mean you can actually smoke in there or does it mean there's a terrace/balcony. Just wondering as it looks like most/all of the rooms at the front look to have balconies!

Hell, everywhere in NYC is infested with cockroaches. You know you're in a fancy hotel when you get bedbugs.

No offence intended Matty - I think you are a New Yorker (or close to) and I love the city - but have always been told that in the event of a Nuclear War or similar - guaranteed survivors would be the cockroaches. :D

I am sorry you seem to be running into problems with AMS accomodation - good luck - it seems increasingly hard to get either affordable and or smoking friendly accomodation.

I had 3 days in the Abba in November - grabbed the chance when I could , as overall getting very tricky these days. Shame that the Funky Monkey is no longer there - great place to stay for all the right reasons. Good luck.
