Now I just need a train to get me to London quicker

Edit.. after just checking it will cost £10 more for me to get to London 1hr 30mins than it would London To Amsterdam 4hr 15min

So what happened to those €40/£35 fares? According to the website today, the lowest price is £51.50. And good luck finding one -- I didn't, though I checked a variety of dates. They're mostly around £90 for a single.

OK,now found a couple, but only London to Amsterdam, on an early (but not, irritatingly, the earliest) train. Prices for the other leg are eyewatering. Still, might do it and find other means of returning. St Pancras to Centraal Station by one train, in less than 5 hours, is very tempting.

I doubt it -- Eurostar doesn't have competition, and it's always been outrageously expensive. The coaches have reached levels where it's probably cheaper for most to fly, at least if they're not starting in London, and can get to the airport fairly easily. Two years ago I could go by coach from London to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Brussels and Brussels to London for €3 -- less than the price it cost to go the station and back. Alas, only a memory now.
