Disappearing Pictures

Post by Lemming »

If you see a little box saying image where there should be a picture in some posts it's probably because the image has an http: address rather than https:

This is becoming more common because the major browsers are all tightening up there default settings.

It's known as 'mixed content' because the forum page is secured but the image loaded into it isn't secured. That means that a determined attacker could intercept the delivery of the image and substitute a different one.

You can get around this by changing site settings if you wish. Another way around it is to open the image in a separate window or tab.

Changing settings has some security implications, although it only takes you back to where we were until recently. In Chrome there is a little padlock symbol next to the address at the top of the screen. Click on that and it should say that the connection is secure. Click on settings and change 'Insecure content' from Blocked to Allow. The hidden images should now appear but be aware that you can no longer absolutely guarantee where they're coming from.
