Hit The North Solo 2024

Day 1 Part 1

The taxi arrives at 3.15am. The driver is chatty but that's OK, I'm feeling livelier than I should considering the time.

Airports are boring. I force down the obligatory pint while I wait.

Up. Down. Train. Town.

I arrive in Dam at around 9am. The weather is fine, its chilly at the moment but it's looking like it's going to be a nice day. The city is almost deserted at this time on a Sunday, it's weird without the hustle and bustle. Nice, but weird.

I'm staying at the Budget Tourist Hostel Inn near the top of Spuistraat, in fact its slap bang in the little RLD there. I'm able to dump my bag there before check in this afternoon. I've not stayed here before, indeed I've not stayed in this part of town for 20 years or so. Quick word on the digs - decent, definitely stay here again. I'm pleasantly surprised to find breakfast is included. Bargain. I'm not normally one for breakfast, coffee and weed suffices however I make the most of it and have pancakes with maple syrup every day.
All linen is included and there's a full length curtain on each bunk. Staff were friendly and efficient. The staaircase had a faint smell of noodles.

I've already packed a satchel with essentials on the train so just dump the case and head out for a smoke.

I wander down Spuistraat to Sativa which is a new one on me. I descend the few steps and am greeted by a delightfully rustic interior. There's lots of Delftware tiles and the whole vibe is very chill indeed. The lady behind the counter is chatty. I opt for Pink Runtz at E10 and attempt to buy a grinder and lighter but the lady is having none of it "Why buy when you can borrow"? she says and hands me a tray with all the kit i need. I knock back an espresso and roll up the Runtz. I decide to head out and sit outside for a moment before pushing on. Taking stock of the weed, it's OK - no more. Thinking back to Runtz I've had both at home and in Mokum, I can't remember one I've really enjoyed. Ah well.

It's shopping time, I want to get a few bits in my pocket for starters. Next stop, Family First

Didn't make it on my last trip, think it was mad busy every time i went past. Predictably quiet at this time on a Sunday the tender has time for basic pleasantries. I love me an orange strain and I've been eyeing the menu updates on FBN's site with Fanta Orange a fixture on the last few updates. I grab a gram of that at E13 and also a gram of Dreams Gold at E16. Onwards.

It's a good old walk to Chapiteau from here, vis Marnixstraat and Nassaukade, but it's a great place to stock up. The weather is lovely and there's always things to see.

Image

The dude at Chapiteau is happy to show me a variety of weed. Great bargain shop this, nothing over E12.50, solid quality.

I get a gram of Tangie at E12.50, Truffel at E11 and an old fave, Blue Dream at E8.50. Free pack of tips. It's a simple buy and fly place so I head out with my bud but without my cap, I'm immediately called back by the tender. Blimey, I'm only one joint in and already forgetting bits of myself!

I pop my head in Catch 33 and scan the menu but no purchase today, I headed back to Dam and to The Plug. Although I've popped my head in once or twice, I've not actually been in since it was Utopia. Sighs. I got some SFV OG for around E15 before. heading back out.

I've not had a smoke since the Runtz this morning. I still need a lighter and grinder for a start! I decide to go for a drink and a smoke at Suzies - if I can get a seat outside. On the way I dive into Bagheera, primarily for some flower - Gummy Bearz for E12, but also for a lighter/grinder - I had a Phenofinders lighter a few years back so I'm hoping for a replacement. No dice, both lighter and grinder are unbranded, generic. Never mind. Time for Suzies...

Hey @kalima Family First was a little hit and miss I'd have to say. From my experience, I'm not buying into the hype yet but I'll pop in again on my next trip as I'm in no way writing them off yet either

Yeah, he sure has. The Dreams Gold was pretty nice to be fair, and at a fair price - I'd definitely try other strains by them

Day 1 Part 2

I make it to Suzies, grab myself a drink and a table outside - barside rather than canalside. I check out my little stash and select the Blue Dream, I wrap it all up, spark up, sit back and relax. Ahhhhh. So this Blue Dream at 8.50 a g is pretty nice, grey ash but really tasty and burnt well, it's much better than I'd expect from the price.

Image

I'm joined at the next seat by a chap named Caspar. Amsterdam born but lives in Italy now and back for his yearly family visit. We chat about all sorts for quite some time, not least about the changes we've both seen in the city over the years. I treat myself to another beer and another joint, Tangie this time and it was a real treat for me, a strong, zingy orange flavour that lasted the whole joint.

I've got a nice brain fuzz on me now so I bid farewell to Caspar and move on. I wander around Dam in a bit of a daze for a few minutes, then head up Warmoestraat checking out some. bars for later and nipping in a head shop for some papers, before checking in at the digs.

Image

Quick freshen up and back out to Batavia. Walking from Spuistraat across Damrak it's still really quiet and when I get to the Batcave I'm the only one there.

Window seat it is!

Image

Image

I settle in and roll up the Fanta Orange from Family First - I'd been looking forward to this one but I was really disappointed with it. It tasted OK for the first few hits but soon descended into harshness and burnt black as night. Not impressed at all.

I am, however, in a good humour. I've enjoyed my day so far, I'm also enjoying how quiet everywhere is and I'm getting a little merry. So much so that I entertain myself by pulling silly faces at the tourist boats that pass constantly. Not in a nasty way and always with a big grin and a wave. I smoke the Gummy Bearz from Bagheera which was a lovely drop. Sweet and creamy flavour and nice pale ash. 12Euro - Bargain!

Image
Gummy Bearz ^^^

Couple of pints to accompany the reefers and I'm chilled but ready to move on. I roll up the Dreams Gold from FF for the journey and make my way out. It's a good smoke, burns clean, I decide I'm going to head down to Leidseplein for some food, but not before swinging by Dampkring for a quick pick up of Gushers at E16.

After a pizza at what is now becoming a regular place I grab some refreshments and head to Vondelpark for a smoke. I sit and smoke the SFV OG which was fine, no complaints. It's late evening now and the sun is setting, casting a golden glow over the leafy park. It feels like I'm sat in a painting.

It's time for a restock. I've been obsessing over the menus site in the lead up to my trip and have a bit of a list. With this in ind I head up to 1e Hulp for some 24K Gold hash. It's one of my favourite strains but I see more of the hash than the flower these days.

Image
24K Gold Hash ^^^

It's a dark, sticky glob of orangeyness that's a bit of a nightmare to work with to be honest.

From Hulp I consider Cheech & Chongs - which I've never visited - but instead head round the corner to Plug West. I decide to treat myself and ask the staff their advice on a good Cali, they suggest a new drop Dulche De Leche at E25. Onwards.

Image
Dulche De Leche ^^^

Next stop is 137 for some Sherbanger and then back to Bagheera - hopes of a re-up of the Gummy Bearz were dashed as they'd just sold out. I grab a gram of Lemon Bubble as I'd not had any for a while.

Image

Image

Back in the thick of it I divide my time between Suzies and 55, I'd not been in 55 before but the 420 crew seemed to enjoy themselves so why not? I sat in a window seat watching warmoestraat and smoking the Gushers - really nice example of the strain, great flavour. A fave.

While I'm chilling several groups come in but not a single one stays longer than a few seconds which was odd but I care not. This window seat is excellent for people watching.

At Suzies I sit in the same seat outside as this afternoon. I smoke the Lemon Bubble which was solid as usual. There's a guy sat next to me smoking a huge cigar. I know which I prefer!

I roll up the Sherbanger at some benches on Singel near my hostel - another really smooth and tasty smoke. I wander a little while I smoke and stumble across a building on Singel with a strange pulsating blue light. It looks like an empty shop that is having substantial work done to it - there's holes in the concrete ceiling, ladders strewn around, but the room is dominated by this mass of like fibre optic cables with these tiny blue lights, light fish, darting along the length of the cables. In the darkness behind this I can just about make out the silhouette of a child. I'm momentarily freaked before I realise/assume it's a mannequin or sculpture of some sort. It's too dark to see for sure. The whole set up is very odd and I vow to come back in daylight to check it out - of course, I sleep on it, forget and never do work out what the hell was going on there.

I did get a couple of terrible photos so if anyone does know, please...

And that's me for the night. Zzzzz

I too had and enjoyed it on my last visit it seems a bit of a fixture. I really like it.
Drew is Sharing rated it very badly in a recent YT vid which I found surprising, its been bang on whenever I've had it
