Day 4 Part One - 03/11/24 - Morning/Afternoon

The day started like every other, with pastries and juice from the Spar. Today it was a pain au chocolat with vanilla paste, very nice. In my pocket was the first joint of the SSH from CS Noord, so with a full belly I headed into the main part of Vondelpark. I wander around lakes and over bridges for what feels like about 5 minutes, then settle on a bench by the water. And old fella is sitting on a bridge playing the harmonica. Not busking, not for money, just for the joy of it. I spark the SSH. This one was worth the wait. A pillar of Amsterdam, this one is a strain I got a taste for on my first trip in 2013, and the smell and taste always bring me back to being 20 years old with an open mind and a twinkle in my eye. Perfection. Enjoying my favourite buds in a beautiful setting with sweet music, this is the magic of Amsterdam.

I enjoy myself for a little while, before heading back to the hotel. I think I have gone back the way I came, but I get turned around somewhere, and Google maps imforms me I am now 20 minutes away from where I started. Once I'm back on the right track, I give the Mrs her pastry and she agrees that it is amazing. Since yesterday was "her day", I declared that today would be mine, so I made some plans in my notebook.

We started with the Metro to Centraal Station. We try to check in, but our 3 day tickets have run out, so we use the machine to get another pair. The public transport in Amsterdam is clean, convenient and efficient, and almost always spot-on-time. From Centraal we pop to Siberie, where I purchase a gram of Wonka Bar at €13. Siberie always seem to have a nice non-haze sativa at this price point, and today is no exception. We debate a tram out to the Baarsjes for a hash crawl, but we decide against it, opting for a quick panini from a cheese shop on Singel and a trek out to Spirit.

On the journey, Mrs SB exclaims that she needs to pee, BADLY. Google maps says we are only 2 minutes away from Spirit, but she is adamant she can't make it. I suggest we get some coffees from the cafe on the square we are currently on, so she can use the facilities inside, to which she agrees. The drinks are delivered and I ask if she is going inside. "No, I'm OK, I'll wait until Spirit." Fuck's sake. I tell her the next drinks are on her. I make the most of it, and enjoy my cappuccino and cigarettes in this decidedly continental setting. We finish and press on.

We arrive at Spirit, a new shop for both of us. I get a gram of Amnesia hash at €6, and the Mrs gets 2 Sprites, thank you very much. She uses the toilet. A total locals vibe in this place, we sit in the back room and I skin up some of the Wonka Bar. A spicy affair, this one reminds me of Neville's/Liberty Haze without the Haze. I roll up some of the Amnesia hash, and we select a pinball machine. I suggest The Munsters for Mrs SB as she is a lover of all things spooky, and I go for Stranger Things. The hash doesn't taste much of the mother plant and the effect is medium-strong, but I didn't expect a miracle at the price. We are now sitting over by the pool table, smoking spliffs and observing the locals watching football on the TV. Little moments.

Since neither of us have ridden the tram yet, we opt for that as our method of transport back to the Centrum. We choose the Tony's Chocolonely store as our destination, hoping to make a custom bar. We formulate a plan, order our chocolate then chill in Hill St Blues while we wait for it to be made. When we reach the shop, the queue is massive and there are signs outside saying the machines are broken. We decide to go in anyway, and the queue goes down on less than 5 minutes.

Overpriced but nice chocolate in hand, we head for Hill St anyway. We smoke Wonka Bar and Amnesia hash in thr front window seats, watching life on Warmoestraat drift on by. Bliss. The Mrs doesn't like hash as she finds it too harsh on the throat, but I tell her she should try some of the Spirit hash, rolled up with light American Spirit cigarette tobacco. She agrees it is smooth and much more enjoyable than previous hash joints.

With thoughts of Lemon Bubble on the brain, we make a beeline for Bagheera. It is about 4pm by this time. We make it to Kloveniersburgwal, but they are once again out of the Lemon Bubble. I decide on the Purple Strawberry Sherbert instead, at £13. We settle into the smoking area for the last of the Wonka Bar/Amnesia hash double act, and yet another plan for the evening is formulated. The Smoke Boat...

There's a bonus Christmas instalment for you. Keep the change, ya filthy animals...

Just the last part of Day 4 to go. I didn't take any notes on Day 5, so I'll do a short write up for that, plus a summary of the trip and my final thoughts. I will also do a leftover photo dump at the end, as well as flipping the photos that are the wrong way up. Apologies for that. Merry Christmas!

Day 4 Part 2 - 03/11/24 - Evening

With the plan for the boat set in motion, I begin the necessary preparations for the voyage. I grab a nearby tray and set up a rolling station, crafting each bifta with the speed and precision of Private Pyle assembling his rifle in Full Metal Jacket. One SSH for now to get the party started, then I grind the whole gram of Purple Strawberry Sherbert and roll it into 3 joints. I also make one of the Amnesia hash from Spirit, leaving enough for one joint of SSH, and another of Rocky Dennis, in the stash tin. The boat ride is 1 hour, so a spliff every 20 minutes seems reasonable.

I spark up one of the PSS joints. The nugs did indeed have a purple hue, and the smell is a mixture of champagne and Haribo sweets. The taste reminds me of Shoreline, another favourite of mine from the Devils Harvest/Green Place cup-winning glory days of 2014, so I wonder if this is a phenotype of the same strain. Wishful thinking, maybe. I'd kill for some Shoreline... anyway, the buzz is a medium relaxing high with stimulated thoughts, a classic Phenofinders mid-menu offering that took me right back to Voyagers and my youth. Redemption from the disappointing Kosher the other day.

Ready for the Smokeboat, we mosey on down to the dock just past Basjoe, where they are currently boarding. We haven't booked but hope to pay on arrival. The steward tells us that the trips are fully booked all night, but if we follow the 3 guys that just left, we can get to the Centraal Station location, where they will have spaces free. Deeply offended, I tell him I'm an Amsterdam veteran and ACD member, exclaiming that i know exactly where Centraal is and roundhouse kicking him and his clipboard into the canal. Not really, we just walk to Centraal Station.

We arrive at an empty dock, just as a boat pulls in. We join the queue, and get almost all the way to the end before realising we are in the queue for the Buddha Boat. No worries, I tell the Mrs, this line has been recommended to me specifically on ACD, but they might not take us without a booking and it's filling up quick. We hastily leave the queue and book the Smokeboat online, choosing what we feel is a safer bet. A short wait and our vessel for the evening arrives. We are some of the first on board, and opt for the outside seats at the stern, despite the freezing cold.

I ask the staff if the door in front of me (which can't have been more than 12 inches wide) was a toilet, and it was. No light, so I used my phone. I discovered that the toilet was just a bowl on top of a black hole, presumably straight into the canal below. I have visions of losing my phone to the abyss, then have a panic attack in the cubicle. Disturbed, I sit back down. We still haven't departed, but the staff informs everyone that they can begin smoking now. Not wanting to dip into my rations, I skin up some Rocky Dennis, lighting up just as the last passengers arrive. 4 joints in one hour, still reasonable.

The Smokeboat may be the most touristy option when it comes to 420 canal cruises, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were helpful and friendly without being pushy, and we bought 2 Heinekens at €8. Cash or card on board, no boring historical tour, just smokes, drinks, Bob Marley and 90s Hiphop for an hour. We chose to do the trip in the dark, and the outside seating went hand in hand with this, staring at Christmas lights as I got more relaxed with each joint. 2 hash and 2 PSS in that order, to fully appreciate the high of each. Floating through the city I love with the woman I love. Happy days.

We arrange to meet with my pal Elliott while on the boat. I suggest Het Gelderse, since it is close to the dock and I haven't been since the renovation. We disembark and make the short walk, only to find a full coffeeshop, and Elliott outside with a bag of Lemon Haze in hand. He gestures for me to roll a joint out of it, I say no for now. We head round to Green Place instead, and I see that Glen is working at the Joker as we pass. Into Green Place, we are both taken in by the smell of the Purple Punch, so we take a gram each at €12, and a seat at the bar. The Purple Punch SMELLS purple, Robinson's blackcurrant squash purple to be precise, and the taste reflects this. I have heard that Green Place have gone downhill recently, and while their focus has certainly shifted from affordable Dutch strains to overpriced Cali options over time, this one harks back to the days of old.

All 3 of us are starving, and wanting pizza. Elliott works some sort of Google witchcraft and finds a pizza place round the corner. We pass Jolly Joker again, and find a hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant with space for 8 people on a good day. Expecting a sweaty kebab shop pizza, Elliott assures me that the reviews were good, and Jesus Christ was he right. Stonebaked pizza, melting mozzarella and the spiciest pepperoni on Earth, my only regret is finding out they had home made chilli sauce I could have dunked the crusts in, after the fact. Minds blown, we decide to finally call into the Joker.

Glen greets us with a smile and a fist bump. We don't buy any weed here, just enjoy the rest of the Purple Punch, and some of the Gelderse Lemon Haze. Chats, smokes and laughs are had over an hour or two. Good times on the Nieuwmarkt with friends old and new, makes the holiday worth every penny. 3 cans of Coke and a Jolly Joker lighter, and not a cent changed hands. Tired, we exchange hugs and say our sad farewells before walking to Dam and tramming it back to the hotel.

10pm rolls around, and I want to hit the straat for one final hoorah in Mokum. My stash is low and I want to save some cash for the final half day tomorrow, so I allow myself one gram and one drink for the night. Still have a bit of SSH and Rocky Dennis to fall back on as well. With a €20 in the wallet and shrapnel in my pocket, I am determined to try Terps Army, so I make my usual loop once more, with the terrace of the Bulldog Palace being my second option. Terps is full again, and the Bulldog bouncer won't let me into the bar because I have chosen to wear jogging bottoms. None of the other local shops are tickling my fancy, so I peruse CoffeeshopMenus.org and choose Get Down To It as a buy and fly location.

I ask for a gram of the Watermelon Zkittles at €12, and a hash preroll at €4. I hand over the 20, then stand there like a chump before asking for my change. The BT explained to me in a condescending tone that he rounded up the gram to 1.3, in order to not have to give me any change. They pulled this exact same bullshit on my last visit in 2019. In the same visit, they sold a very drunk Scottish guy some €50 full melt hash, when he was clearly after a bit of pollen. They are clearly closing up, and I'm not in the mood for an argument, so I sit on a bench on the Leidseplein and smoke the fairly enjoyable hash joint.

Weighing up my next move, I decide that it is too late to try another coffeeshop, and I may not have enough change on me for a drink anyway. Fuck it, I think, the world is my lobster and I've got a little extra of the Zkittles. Time to skin up. The smell explodes out of the bag, and the joint is fucking incredible. Smooth smoke and perfect white ash, the taste is sensational. I pull out my notebook and write A+++. This is absolutely top shelf product. As a result of this joint, my feelings on Get Down are mixed, and my mouth is dry as fuck. As if by fate, I look over at Burger King and notice a poster: small Coke for €1. This tiny paper goblet may as well be a tankard at this point, and I retire to the tram stop for my next smoke. I notice that, at night, the tram billboards say "Goodnight" to the citizens in many different languages. What a magical city.

I while away an hour or so on the Leidseplein, smoking the Zkittles and finishing off the SSH while taking a few pictures and soaking in some last minute therapeutic vibes. The realisation that I am going home tomorrow washes over me. Swallowing the bittersweet pill, I kick the proverbial can all the way back to the hotel. In an act of defiance, I smoke one more Zkittles doobie at the smoke spot, before setting the dreaded check-out alarm and retiring.

Final Day coming soon...

Day 5 - Final Day - 04/11/24

I get up, shower, and roll a joint of the Watermelon Zkittles, but not before snapping a picture of my Gram Graveyard (collection of empty baggies and tubs). I head outside for one last bittersweet spliff at the smoke spot, making sure to get a photo of my favourite two benches. We are up and at 'em by about 9.30 today, since we need to check out of the hotel by 10. We stow our bags in the luggage room and decide that it's finally time to try poffertjes, the last Amsterdam first of the trip. We head for the Pancake Carousel, via that really swanky newsagents at Marie Heinekenplein for a final pack of American Spirits.

The poffertjes, which we had with powdered sugar, butter and whipped cream, were even tastier than I imagined them to be. We also split a Nutella waffle and wash it down with some lattes. Since we are only 4 minutes away from Club Media, we decide to walk there for a post-breakfast smoke. I buy a Polm joint at €4 and we take a seat by the front window. My phone is nearly dead, but luckily there are power points under ever table, so we decide to settle in here for an hour or two and enjoy some hash and Zkittles while it charges. We then once again board the trusty Metro for a last look at Dam Square.

Mrs SB has it in her head to buy some cheese, so we decide to make our way back to Dam and down the Leidsestraat, having a nose in literally every single cheese shop on the way, free samples and all. In the end, she does not buy any cheese. Since we are both pretty tired at this point, I suggest we just go to Easy Times and wait out the time until out flight, for which we needed to leave town at about 6pm. On the way, we bump into The Gasman, Faded Fairy and Liv from Dam By the Gram. A quick chat about the highlights of our trips, and we carry on to Easy Times.

I want to try the Cotton Candy that I enjoyed the smell of on my last visit, so I go for a gram of that at €12 and two waters. We sit in the smoking area and I pick the exact table where I sat on my first trip, when I smoked isolater hash for the first time. I recall the BT saying "be careful, it's DIFFERENT." I am reminiscing about this as I roll up the Cotton Candy. Funny how time flies. The weed is a little bit disappointing, the unique aroma I smelled seems to have been replaced with something more generic. Perhaps a slightly worse batch, but it smokes OK and the high is nice enough. We smoke through the last of what I have and try to cling on to that I'm-still-in-Amsterdam feeling.

The dreaded hour finally dawns, and we say goodbye to Easy Times and Amsterdam for this trip. I buy a Hash joint on the way out, for the airport of course. We grab the bags, and I take a picture of the hotel just as the sun is setting. We wait for the airport bus at Museumplein, but disaster strikes when the driver informs us that our travel tickets are only valid on the trams and metros. The Mrs starts to panic, but I think on my feet and we get the tram to Centraal Station. One last look back at the city, a big deep breath in, and we catch the train to Schiphol.

I cane the joint and then a cigarette in quick succession while sat on the flowerbeds at Schiphol Plaza, and we get through customs with about 90 minutes to spare. A toastie and an iced coffee from Starbucks later, and we're in the air. It's always depressing going home, but at least you know that the sadness means the holiday was amazing.

Thanks for reading this far folks! Your kind comments kept me wanting to carry on. Next up - Final overall thoughts on the trip, and a spare photo dump.

Great final trip report @Smokeybee21. :) I agree with you 100%, if you're a little sad when you leave, it means you definitely had a wonderful time. And from your reports, you & the Mrs. sure made the most of it. Thanks again for sharing.
P.S. I agree, the Pancake Carousel is awesome place for breakfast. Went there last year with Samantha and will make it a point to stop by again this year during my trip this 4/20.

Really enjoyed the poffertjes, can't believe it took me 11 years to finally try them. Also had our first oliebollen from the stand on Leidseplein (pictured above somewhere), would highly recommend!
