Amsterdam car free on 23 September

28 August 2007

AMSTERDAM – The Amsterdam Tourism & Convention Board has announced a car-free Sunday in the capital on 23 September. The motto for the day is: "Travel healthy in a clean city."

Cars will not be permitted to enter the area within the A10 ring road between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm. Traffic will be allowed to leave and car traffic will be permitted in the Zeeburg area, however.

The City of Amsterdam hopes the event will encourage residents to walk and cycle more. It also wants to boost public transport use and the Park & Ride service in the inner city.

Residents are also encouraged to organise events and activities. Public transport and taxi service will continue to operate.

Rotterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven and Leiden are also taking part in the plan and will each organise a car-free day.

Anyone happen to know if the TukTuks and BikeTaxis will be allowed to operate, or is it just the car taxis? (I appreciate that would be counter intuitive, but worth checking.)
