Nice one, I often try to speak a little broken Dutch while in Amsterdam. I lived in Pretoria when I was younger so a lot of words sound familiar, although the locals often notice you are struggling and automatically speak English. I always try to greet and say goodbye in Dutch though...

When I tried to speak German in Germany, everyone went straight to English. In France, however, they did not most of the time. Which was cool, I just pulled out my phrase book and tried my best.

If you are in france and try to speak french the locals will still try to ignore you, they are an ignorant lot IMO lovely place tho.

I don't think that's true...... in Paris maybe it is to a certain extent but I've never had that in any of the Alpine resorts.
Maybe it's all about how you come accross as a person..... I'd call it a failing to assume a whole nation is ignorant.
