BTW, I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek with my comment.

I'll admit that the American crowd we have in this forum seems to be comprised of very decent people. BUT...I still feel that as whole Americans tend to feel...mmm..."priviledged" when traveling abroad. Such as, "Everyone should speak English." and not making any attempt to learn another's language, etc. Whether you're an American or not you have to admit that our culture leans toward the spoiled and inconsiderate side.

Congrats on your citizenship!

Honestly, it's always nice to hear of people becoming naturalized as us born-and-bred 'mericans too often take for granted how fortunate we are to live here. I'm proud to have YOU aboard *bows* :)

Congratulations, Dimon. Welcome to American citizenship. Be proud of it. Be a good example of it. I'm sure you can and will.

I'm a natural born and raised American citizen, and proud of it. I love my country, with all its faults, because of its virtues. I do not, however, feel we do not need or can't show improvement in many areas. I needn't rehearse them for the members of the forum. That being said, I would like to say that where ever they may come from, when idiots go abroad, they behave as idiots. When kind, considerate, thoughtful, courteous and loving people go abroad they behave as kind, considerate, thoughtful, courteous, loving people. People from both these categories live in every corner of every country. The quicker we learn to put aside the easy labels of nationality, religion, sexual orientation and so forth, the better the world will be. If an American is an idiot, treat him as an idiot. But please give him a chance to prove his idiocy. Don't deal with him based on the assumption he's an American and therefore an idiot; treat him as an idiot based on rational empirical observation of his idiocy. Our Dutch hosts are not immune to idiocy in its various forms. They have an open society to a large extent, but they are not endlessly tolerant, or uniformly enlightened. A Dutch friend from one of the shops once told me a Dutch saying; "You can tell a Dutchman, but you can't tell him much." Not all the crime in Amsterdam and the Netherlands is caused by tourists, non-Dutch residents, or foreign born Dutch citizens. Cruelty, greed, hate, violence, and stupidity are equal opportunity employers that know no national bounds.

We can only behave well ourselves, treat each other, in the forum and outside it, with kindness, consideration, thoughtfulness, courtesy, and love. We might get so good at it after a while, we can even forgive some of the idiots.

I said very clearly I was taking a picture of the decor. There were no people in the frame at all. I said specifically I don't take pictures of anyone without their permission when I'm in the shops. Did you even read the post before replying?
Indeed, maybe we can one day reach the level of respect held for Americans in Europe eh?
