Die Port Van Cleve

Post by Grrl_Interrupted »

Just spent week here, and cannot fault it in any way; superb service, polite, professional staff, clean, comfortable surroundings, and the bar and brasserie on site are both to die for.

For anyone that doesn't mind spending a few extra quid to be comfortable, I'd highly recommend it.

Oh, and it has a rich and fascinating history, which you may well be told all about if you are in the bar and it is not so busy :)

a FEW extra quid?? At EU$ 250-300 per night there's got to be better deals and hotels around.

What did you pay per night Grrl? I note you can find twin rooms for around EU$100 online for November, I also see that it's not highly fancied by the reviewers at trip advisor; http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review ... lland.html

Assuming most of us will never get there to hear some of the buildings "stories" for ourselves, I'd be interested to hear what you were told of the buildings past, if you care to share?

Like I say, you get what you pay for in 'Dam; you will not find relative comfort for less than £70 a night, unless you get well out of the city.

Plus, if you book online, almost everywhere will give you a generous discount...like up to 70% off.... which is why I have done just that for years....

As for the history etc. have a read of this (from their website):
G.A. Heineken started everything on this location when he opened his first Heineken brewery. Due to the city council filling in the canal in front in the name of modernisation, he moved to the present location on the Stadhouderskade. The Hulscher brothers continued the business and on 5th of September 1870 a unique beer house, called ‘Die Port van Cleve’ opened its doors. It was a popular place with professionals and artists. It did not take long to evolve from beer house to restaurant with the Brasserie ‘De Poort’, serving typical Dutch dishes and what was to become the famous numbered steak (to date almost 6 million served).
A further development was from restaurant to hotel with the advent of the travelling salesmen.
Over the years ‘Die Port van Cleve’ has undergone several internal structural changes, all of which have been for the better. One unchanged feature is the unique frontage, which has a listed building status, and also the unique interior of the Bar-Bodega ‘De Blauwe Parade’.
Also, here is part of the frieze in the bodega:

Be aware, as I said before, one does not have to be a guest at the hotel to patronise the bar or brasserie....

I didn't; it was a gift. So, I didn't ask, because I thought that would be impolite.

Considerably less than list price, though...... and even if you don't get an online discount when you book, even the poshest hotels on earth are open to haggling. End of the day, if they have a spare room, they'd sooner it went for fifty euro than not at all.

Damn I'll save some cash and have a nice roomy apartment and cook a fat meal for my wife. Or use the extra cash for a nice night on the town.
