The Taco Shop
Great place for Mexican food, about three blocks west of Greenhouse Tolstraat. Small menu, but all fresh, no MSG, no lard in the refried beans. They don't advertise and have grown their business strictly through word of mouth. They also have a shop in Copenhagen.
Take the No. 4 tram to Lutmastraat (the tram stop where Greenhouse Tolstraat is located) and walk west on Tolstraat, about three blocks, to the corner of Tolstraat and Amsteldijk. The shop is right on the corner.
There are four seats, I think, at a couple of bars. That's the extent of the place.

I agree, courtjester! This small restaurant, called Taco Corner, serves up some terrific, fresh Mexican food. Owned by a couple of American guys. Both guys are really friendly. I find it a great place to stop in to cure the hunger. The prices are decent too. If you are in de Pijp, be sure to stop in and have some of their delicious food. Peace.

It seemed pretty good when I went in there.Although I did live in the Southwest of the U.S for 10yrs.and nothing compares to that Mexican food. But I found Los Pilones acceptable.Sorry you didn't like it.milehigh wrote:Los Pilones my cohones. That place sucks shit or worse. They have no clue what Mexican food is.
However, Taco Shop makes an acceptable taco(better then Taco Mundo) AND they have a unlimited salsa(unheard of in Holland).
milehigh knows Mexican food.

I moved here from Colorado a couple of years ago and have been on a quest for good Mexican food ever since. I can say definatively that it does not exist in Holland. The very best I can do is have some ingredients shipped from there and make my own. In a another life I was a very fat Mexican.geoffk wrote:Can't imagine there could be good Mexican food in the Netherlands, but I'm willing to proved wrong.

Are you familiar with "Chipotle"? There is a place on the side of the Vroom and Dressmen(V&D) store that makes OK burrito's chipotle style. On that same street back toward the river is a Taco Mundo. Judge for yourself. I think its shit personally.
I figured as much. I live in Colorado now. I was thinking I might bring some Cholula with me on my next trip to the Dam. Best condiment, even tastes good with mayonnaise.milehigh wrote:I moved here from Colorado a couple of years ago and have been on a quest for good Mexican food ever since. While I also appreciate the highbrow pursuit of quality Mexican, in the interest of fishing where the fish are, it's probably better reserved for Nuevo Laredo or Juarez than Amsterdam.
On the other hand, you can find decent Mexican food in Amsterdam, just like you can find decent bud on the border, if you know where to look. It might not be the best bud you ever smoked -- or Mexican you've ever eaten -- but it'll sure get you by and satisfy a craving.
And if you hate it, hey, the Greenhouse isn't far away.
Puffin's right, the dude running the place is nice as hell, he'll serve you right, and it's relatively easy on the wallet. And Milehigh's right, they make a good taco and have unlimited salsa.

Is nothing sacred anymore?
Isn't there a Cafe Pacifico in Amsterdam? There's one in London which does really good food so i was hoping the one in Amsterdam would be of equal quality.

Best Mexican food outside of North America
I seriously love good Mexican food like turkey with mole. This is way off topic but I had to pipe in. The best Mexican restaurant outside of the Western Hemisphere is at the Taj President Hotel in Mumbai INDIA!! Its run by a really nice Mexican couple and is decorated with authentic Mexican furniture and art. Its absolutely surreal having mole in India
