I'm more use to Tex-Mex myself, so good Mexican is a treat.
I agree, Cholula kicks ass.

newgog wrote:I seriously love good Mexican food like turkey with mole. This is way off topic but I had to pipe in. The best Mexican restaurant outside of the Western Hemisphere is at the Taj President Hotel in Mumbai INDIA!! Its run by a really nice Mexican couple and is decorated with authentic Mexican furniture and art. Its absolutely surreal having mole in India

What does this have to do with Amsterdam or The Netherlands?

If I'm gonna eat Mexican, it's absolutely gotta be done taqueria style (as opposed to "fancy restaurant style).
That is, served out of a cart, truck, or coverted fast food joint. There must be "tortas"-your choice of meat( ie carne asada, al pastor, carnitas or pollo mole, some other "more adventurous" things like lengua-beef tongue, or "birria"-goat or lamb) on a sweet Mexican roll with cilantro, onions and fresh avocado. Just like you get in LA or Albuquerque.
Mexican just really shines in the simpler "street food" style, IMO.
Are any of the Mexican places like that, or are they the more common "restaurant style" places?

Just went to Los Pilones for the first time. Killer margaritas and this alone is worth a visit. But the food was very good. Is it up to SW US quality? No. But when you live here, you have to simply accept the good sometimes.

Definitely hitting up this place this time around! Meant to go there last visit but never got around to it, but it will be my first place I have dinner this time. They don't open until 4pm (2 on Sunday) so it will coincide nicely with my visit to Greenhouse Tolstraat as it looks to be right down the street.
Their menu looks kickin - good food for the munchies. Can almost taste the chicken nachos!

We did not enjoy the Taco Shop all that much.
Though it must be popular as we noticed there delivery truck everywhere.
Los Pilones was great though, great food, amazing friendly service, large portions and CLEAN.

They look like 2 different type places - the Taco Shop looks almost like a quick fly and buy (or delivery) type place while los Pilones looks like the type of place where you would want to relax and take your time. I imagine I'll have to try both. I just plan on trying the Taco Shop due to its proximity to Greenhouse Tolstraat.

very good tex mex. ordered chili mince super taco and the wife chili buritto. Both were very good and reasonable on price. Very relaxed locals shop when we visited on a tuesday night. Blues playing on the sound system if i remember. Hooker, muddy waters etc. very relaxed vibe. After smoking, walking all day popping in here made me so relaxed that if i didnt order take out i may of slipped into a coma lol !!!!

So I really like mexican/tex-mex food, and my only experience while in Amsterdam was with Taco Mundo which I thought was pretty poor (bland, mild).
However walking back after a trip to CS Ibizia and the supermarket, me and the missus noticed this place and the menu looked really tempting. Got home and googled for some reviews, overwhelmingly positive so the next day we got a delivery to our apartment. Run by a really friendly american guy, the food was damn tasty and very good value for money. I would say perhaps my Beef Chimichanga was a little dry in the middle, but the flavours were great ! I shall deffo be ordering from here again, maybe a Chilli con Carne Super Burrito. Inside looked like a cafe type of vibe (meaning not a restaurant for a smart meal or anything) and I hear it is a friendly local crowd, blues rock type music.
