Good Fillet Steak.

Post by Ash333 »

Once in a while, i get the munchies, and when i feel like a splurge I go for a good steak (cooked rare).

Other than the Gaucho Grill on Leidseplein which is good, (but 40E+) does anyone know anywhere good, for less than 30E. I dont want a steak sandwhich, It needs to be at least 300g of fillet steak! I dont mind walking as I do that anyway, but I'd like to stay within the Singel Gracht.

If anyone knows of somewhere good please go ahead and post. If its smoker friendly then even better.

Thanks Ash

Gauchos is very touristy and average imo.

Cafe De Klos @ Kerkstraat 4 do an amazing fillet, another top place La Brasa http://www.labrasa.nl/ @ Haarlemmerdijk 16 is probably the best (I've found) in Amsterdam or head over to Wilma & Alberts http://www.wilma-alberts.nl/ in Haarlem.

On Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal there is an Argentinian steak house quite close to Centraal Station, I had one of the best T-Bones I've ever had in there. I'm also an unstoppable carnivore, it was top gear if a little pricey but you get what you pay for... dunno the name but it was before The Grasshopper and after Centraal on the left side of the street as you walk down (same side as Grasshopper) - I think there's 2 steak places quite close together on that road and I can't for the life of me remember which one it is without seeing it but the big dude outside who was like a massive Morgan Freeman had me sold with his patter so we went in to check it out. Glad we did, one of the best steaks ever!! :-)

Nah dude, don't think it's that place - the pics of the front don't look right... also from the map it looks like it's on the wrong side of the street. This place was kinda small, but the food was excellent!

I'd go for a Sirloin or Rib Eye......

The problem with fillet no matter how well cooked or tender is it's lack of taste..... this is why many fillet dishes come with a sauce.

Go for a tasty cut.

the tenderness is fantastic. ever had a cheap pub steak? remember sawing through it with a serrated steak knife? a good steak cuts easily with a normal knife! I do like ribeye steaks, but I'm not so keen on having a bone on my plate.... call me fussy but I don't like my dead animals to look like dead animals.

T-Bone is king of steaks!! Fillet and sirloin on the bone so flavour and juicyness is increased.... * drools *

does the bone increase flavour? i thought it increased your chances of caching bse/cjd.

Cooking meat on the bone gives an extra depth of flavour and helps keep the meat succulent while cooking. I'm also 99% certain that eating meat from the bone does not increase your chances, eating poorly reared meat that have been fed on MBM (banned since 1989) or eating shite meat (beefburgers) which may have had traces of spinal column in it from the mechanical method it is 'reclaimed'.

In short, steaks aren't really a danger. Eat good quality steak from a good quality eatery or butcher and you really don't have to worry. T-Bone is thee best cut imo but each to their own.

Aye, you want good marbling of the fat through your steak. Agreed on the shouts to stein and floyd, I was actually watching an old re-run of Floyd's show from years ago and stein was a guest on it as a junior cook, he looked about 19

It's all about UKTVFood - great channel!!

On my trip last summer my dad and I went to 2 different Argentine steak houses - one was next to Betty Boop coffeeshop and the other right opposite, next to the Tulip Inn Hotel (i think).

I was a little worried that these might be overpriced as they are probably popular with tourists, although I can definitely recommend both of them highly and would have no worries about returning to either. If i remember correctly the one next to Betty Boop was a little nicer food wise (or at least they just cooked the steak better) however the one opposite had a little nicer decor. Either way the 2 of us really enjoyed both places!!

I've been meaning to get to Haarlem but I'm always to lazy once I've had a wake n bake. I'm going to try and go in May tho, and I'll try wilma and alberts, as I've seen them recomended elsewhere aswell. Anyone know what there prices range?
