Gordon Brown PM backs re-classifying cannabis

Gordon Brown has said he is determined to send a signal to young people that the use of cannabis is "unacceptable".
At his monthly Downing Street news conference, the Prime Minister indicated his strong support for re-classifying cannabis again as a Class B drug.

His comments came ahead of the expected review this month of the Advisory Council on Drugs of the decision to downgrade it to a Class C drug. While Mr Brown said that he would consider the council's report, he made clear that he believed that change was necessary.

"I believe that if we are sending out a signal particularly to teenagers, and particularly those at the most vulnerable age, young teenagers, that we in any way find cannabis acceptable, given all that we now know about the changes in the way cannabis is being sold in this country, that is not the right thing to do," he said.

"My personal view has been pretty well known for some time. Given the changing nature of the stock of cannabis that is coming into the country and greater damage that that appears to be doing to people who use it, there is a stronger case for sending out a signal that cannabis is not only illegal but it is unacceptable."

When will politicians realise that it makes no difference what class of drug marijuana is put in??....if people want to smoke it i'm pretty sure they will regardless what someone has classed it as.

I wish they'd concentrate on more important problems in the country than something as subordinate as classing cannabis.

So what would that mean if i got found with an eighth or somethin then, cos at the moment my friend got busted with under an eighth and they just confiscated it and wrote his name down.

if its class B will it mean more?

it means that instead of confiscation and yer name jotted down it'll be a trip to the magistrates and a fine or a small govt sponsored holiday in the big hotel with real terrorists, murderers, rapist and child molestors.....yet another winning idea from the govt that brought iraq, afghanistan, sleaze and corruption..............not that i hate all politicians in britain ...much...i just hate con artists

I've been caught with more than an eighth and all I got was a caution at the police station this was under Class B.

I don't know about nothing to hide..... I think it's great that they stood by their civil liberties and at least gave us a frame of reference in case our employers implement a policy.

Lead story on the BBC today:

Cannabis 'should remain class C'

The official body which advises the government on drugs policy has decided cannabis should remain a class C drug, the BBC understands.

What's the betting he will ignore them and score some political points with the Daily Mail readers?
