I'm still around too, not as often as I used to be....partly because I have only smoked for 1 week (in Amsterdam over new year) in the past 6 months, but I do enjoy reading and contributing on this forum regardless.
Only problem is whenever I get into reading it, I get an urge to book another trip...which at the moment doesn't look possibly until July/August time.

Anything I can do to help, Lem? I'm no computer geek but I know how to delete things.Lemming wrote:A couple of people helped me for a while but they get bored too. I have another plan to deal with them but haven't had time to implement it yet.

Thanks for the offer Puffin but it really is a tedious task. You’d soon get bored!
Fortunately I now have better access to the server where the forum is hosted so there may be some easier options. I have this idea of creating a simple SQL script that will replace the content of the website field for every member that signed up more than a few days ago and has not been activated. This is fairly easy but I need to test it on a spare forum because if it goes wrong it could be quite destructive.
I can also now install patches on the forum software as I did for merging threads (a godsend for keeping the Coffeeshop Reviews section tidy). There may well be some good utilities out there that would also help with this task.
Some facts and figures
Some 40 to 50 new members sign up to the forum every day. They must email me to have their accounts activated manually and about 4 or 5 a day do this. Of those maybe one or two actually start posting.
Most of the memberships that never get activated are not real people, they’re just spammers. A few real people will, sadly, never be activated either because they don’t realise they need to contact me or whatever. Those people who are activated but don’t ever post presumably just make use of the other facilities only available to members such as voting in polls.
There are also an unknown but probably huge number of people that just read the forum without registering. Over 3000 new people find the ACD every day, mostly via Google, and a good proportion of them will find their way through to the forum, especially now it’s more prominent in the new layout.
