Train conductors may carry batons, handcuffs

Dutch Rail (NS) is in talks with the justice ministry on equipping an elite group of 1,000 conductors with batons and handcuffs, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

The NS also wants these conductors to have the authority to search people found travelling without a ticket and handcuff them if they refuse to show ID.

‘We are in talks with the ministry to see if our service and security teams can get expanded rights to use force,’ an NS spokesman told the paper. ‘The power to use searches, handcuffs and batons are part of that.’

The new rights would apply to 1,000 of the company’s 3,200 conductors – an elite group which has been given special training in dealing with difficulties on problem routes since January.

The NS wants to run trials in Amsterdam and Zwolle for three months but no start date has been set pending justice ministry permission.

Well, this is a good way in order for the peace and order to function.

Left-wing bullshit.They want to gain more and more control, I can't say that giving handcuffs and batons to guys that were trained to check your tickets is a good thing, in order to have the right to restrain other person, you need to be properly trained both mentally and physically.
Btw, can't imagine the usual old dutch train conductor, hitting me with baton:D

In my experience , the train staff are very courteous and helpful. I did talk to one who had been assaulted though by some drunken oafs....

Here we have cops that do ticket control on public transportation . You better have your transport ticket or you get a nice ticket that can be 500$
They put cop in cause ppl would test the system some would sue the transport security for all sorts of thing from sexual arresment to plain assault from them cause grabbing some one by shoulder or wanking them is assault ... So they put cops and don't try any bull shit cause you'll be arrested they even check ppl bags ...

had a simular thing happen, was late to the airport and didn't have time to get a ticket so just jumped on.About 3 mins before the airport stop the conductor walks through the door..
"Tickets please!"...i'm was the first person he ask's for a ticket..shit.
So i quickly say, er.. oh yes i need a ticket, doh! Also seen someone get a fine,right at the airport stop so your milage may vary...

In the UK i have seen Chav's blaitently tell the conducter to fuck off.
