Spam

Post by Lemming »

The biggest admin task I have on this forum is removing spam memberships and posts. I don't intentionally censor anyone except obvious spammers. If I accidentally delete a real post or member then I apologise.

I know that American members in particular often prefer to remain anonymous and use fake email addresses. That’s fine but I may soon have to use some kind of verification system to stop the robots. So, get in quick if you want to register anonymously.

Thanks Claud. I find those code things troublesome on other sites so I'm reluctant to use it but, if the spambots get much worse, I may need to.

Some time ago I changed the registration process so that new members must enter a code to join. This is a bit of a pain for new members but should stop robots joining (automated processes that search for forums and join them in order to advertise).

Recently, however, the number of new spam memberships and posts that I have to delete has started to increase again. Presumably these are real people taking the time to register and post messages.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop these people and save the time-consuming and boring daily task of deleting their memberships and posts?

If it is real people doing the spamming theres no real way around it apart from deleting the posts/accounts unless there an option toput email verifacation on this would mean that you have to send a email with a link on that verifys their account.

lemming....i think Boner pretty much nailed it...email verification is the only other thing to really do and this software might not even have that option.

other than that you could make some people mods and they could do some of the spam deleting...this obviously won't stop the spammers from gettin on, but it would take some of the work out of your hands.

I would suggest that spam comes as a result of spyware/adware on your system which tracks your individual IP address and sends you e-mails based on your internet activities.

This is why you have no doubt read about some people who receive fake e-mails (say from a bank) and believe it to be genuine and submit various details only to find that they have been scammed (and with very little chance of compensation as well).

Much like junk mail sent in the post, people may receive payments for spreading these unsolicited e-mails or links.

Again, only suggesting, but the e-mails sent to people may contain further spyware programs or even viruses but more and more ISP's are releasing software to combat spyware/adware so it's really only a problem if you open the e-mail or click the link.

i think den was refering to the forum spammers.

they don't really do much to the forum, except waste bandwidth and take up server space with thier crap. Often the website they have links to are full of spyware/malware and viruses that will infect you computer if you go to the sites. So just don't click on any of the spammers links and you will be fine .
