Pancakes

Post by SeniorHippies »

Even Rachel Ray thinks the Pancake Bakery is the cat's meow. She went there on her visit to Amsterdam for her TV show. Rachel's a cutey, but I don't think she's all that acute in a culinary sense. My visit to the Pancake Bakery was a disappointment. It was a few years ago, on a weekday afternoon. The waitress did us a great favor by waiting on us. Our food sat in the kitchen till it was satisfyingly cold. The prices were out of line even had the food been served as it should have been.

A better Dutch pancake, not American, is to be found at the Carousel on the Weteringschanz, out by the Heineken Experience. They have a good variety of pancakes, sweet and savory, poffertjies, English breakfast, and whole lot more. The service is efficient and courteous, and the prices are reasonable. Most of all the pancakes are tender and rich. I like mine naturaal, just butter and powdered sugar. Maple syrup is not to be found, alas, but...

There is another good pancake shop pretty much right behind the Magna Plaza, but I do no remember the name.

I've never seen an American Style Pancake in Netherlands, though I do not seek out "American breakfast" places.

I would have to agree with you there. I thought the food was so-so and handled with a bare minimum of competence. The venue itself was charming albeit a bit contrived, but nothing could disguise the fact that it was a blatant tourist trap that wasn't above charging you a few extra euros for disneyfied ambiance.

I was initially surprised though, by the breadth of menuwhich included "international pancakees" such as a Masai version, Chilian (sic) version, and a Hungarian version*. *Why would a Hungarian version contain chorizo? A lot of the ingredients seem to be pretty standard and fairly available however, so I wasn't inspired to order them. They do American style pancakes btw, but why bother if you're in Holland?

Studio 2 by the flower market, close by the original Dampkring. Can't toke up there tho'. It's been on my radar since I got a load of their poffertjes. Here's their menu.

"Without permission"!?! *GASP*

Lol...perfectly acceptable in every shape and form :D

We loved the place. The staff were extremely friendly and the food couldn't have been better. Even their coffee was pretty damn good.

Also, it's lovely to look out the window at the flower market and watch the people pass by. Wonderful spot, IMO.

I like the Pancake House - coffee's excellent. We sat out front last time as the weather was beautiful.

A quality breakfast can also be had up Prinsengracht, past the Hotel Pulitzer, first corner. I think it's called the CoffeeHouse...excellent service, small place, good food.

I am of the firm belief that eating poffertjes can put one in such a state of zen that it opens direct communication with Buddha.

Are these the really huge pancakes? There is a place in London they do these called My Old Dutch, was nice but really heavy. I actually peferred what we had for starters which I can only describe as something that resembled Findus crispy pancakes.
