Taxi rank at Amsterdam Central Station again a mess
published: Sunday, May 18 2008, 11:18PM
The old problems at the taxi rank at the Central Station are back again. The City has announced tougher enforcement of the rules.
Although it is officially forbidden to enter the taxi rank (nicknamed by some drivers the 'Gaze Strip') without a special permit, the old problems have returned.
Long lines of taxis are waiting to get on the taxi rank, there are arguments among them, they are sometimes rude to clients, sometimes charge too high prices and often refuse short rides.
Some months ago, these problems seemed to have dissappeared, as the city of Amsterdam introduced stringent rules for taxis at the Central Station. Because the enforcement has been softened, particularly during the night, the problems are partially back again.
A spokesperson of the City admitted the problems are known, and in the course of this week measures will be taken.

They are always rude and I've yet to find ONE that will get out of bed and take me anywhere - especially when I have luggage. They're absolutely useless and don't have the right to call themselves taxi drivers.Puffin13 wrote: they are sometimes rude to clients, sometimes charge too high prices and often refuse short rides.
The best number is to get the Bustaxi from Schipol to your Hotel, those guys are just about friendly and at least you get to the door of the right hotel.
Thanx for letting me rant
Can be found at 420, Illusia Road growing my own

I have to use a taxi to get from just outside a'dam to schipol airport at 7.30 in the morning, with luggage, on our last day..
..do you think they will overcharge me?
This is actually my first time abroad alone ( I'm 18 ) and I'm worried about booking the taxi back now..
Maybe I'm just being neurotic..
Concerning early flights out of Amsterdam, i now know it is a bad idea after i slept through my alarm (6:30 in time for a 10 ocloc flight), i woke at 9 am at camping Zeeburg, which entailed a 6-8 minute sprint to the tram stop, a 10 minute wait for the tram and another 10 minutes on the tram, a lucky qquick(1 min) depature from Centraal train station (without buying a ticket
which was lucky that the inspector didn't inspect me!) and however long it takes from Centraal to Schipol which is 15-20 minutes i think...i made it with maybe 3 minutes before they closed the flight..So so lucky! My last smoke in A/dam definitely had someting to do with this...
So i would recommend trying to change your departure flight for an evening booking if possible....and not to put too much trust in the taxi...Because you never know what might happen...not to mention the extra few hours in Amsterdam are worth every penny.
On another note i have found taxi drivers in Amsterdam to be more than helpful when asking for directions, on 2 occasions i walked up to taxi's and asked where so and so street is and straight away they pulled out there street directories.
