Bus drivers enter third day of strike

Bus drivers in large parts of the Lowlands continue to be on strike as their union reject a wage offer by the employers.

THE NETHERLANDS - Bus drivers in large parts of the Netherlands are on strike for the third day in a row.

The trade union federation FNV has rejected a wage offer by the employers in regional bus transport.

The collective labour agreement dispute has already lasted several months.

On Sunday, bus drivers went on an open-ended strike after holding a series of customer-friendly industrial actions. Several provinces have now announced legal steps against the transport companies.

The unions and the employers have asked former minister Klaas de Vries to investigate regional transport.

De Vries says he wants to present his findings on Friday. His report is to provide a basis for further talks between unions and employers. The CNV trade union federation says De Vries will not mediate in the dispute.

Dutch regional transport strike drags for ninth day

Unions are ignoring a call by transport companies to suspend strike but have agreed to discuss a one-year-collective labour agreement.

THE NETHERLANDS - Dutch regional transport workers are out on strike for the ninth consecutive day on Monday.

Unions have ignored a call by transport companies to suspend the strike but have agreed to discuss a one-year collective labour agreement at informal talks due to be held Monday.

The agreement is seen as a step towards a permanent solution for the structural problems plaguing regional transport.

Workers on five ferry services over the River Maas will also be striking during the morning and evening rush hours Monday. The ferry workers are demanding a better collective labour agreement.

The ferries, serving the provinces of North Brabant and Gelderland, transport at least 3,600 vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians per day.
