THE NETHERLANDS - Dutch anglers are calling on consumers to stop eating eels. The anglers' federation says the number of eels in Dutch waters has decreased by 75 percent since the 1950s.
The organisation has adopted a measure making it compulsory for anglers to return to the water any eels they catch after 1 January 2009. The move is in compliance with European measures intended to prevent eels from becoming extinct.
