Facebook beach party ditched says website

A beach party that had been planned to take place at a south Devon resort this weekend looks to have been cancelled.

The event on 4 July in Torbay was being advertised on the social networking site Facebook as a "night of mayhem".

An entry has since appeared on the site saying that due to an "unexpected high number of people", the event was off.

More than 4,000 people claimed they would attend but Devon and Cornwall Police had said they would prevent the event which they said was dangerous.

Police warning

The post on the website warned that people attending beaches in Torbay on the weekend "will be asked to leave or be arrested".

It continued: "Do not travel to Torbay. There will still be a high police presence around the coast.

"No event whatsoever will be taking place in Torbay and we urge you to inform all others you know that are planning to attend that it is no longer going ahead.

"Sorry for any inconvenience."

It added that the Facebook page would be closed "in due course".

Police said they were "delighted" the organisers had "seen common sense and taken the responsible step".

A police spokesman said: "Although it appears the event has been cancelled police are remaining vigilant and are prepared to deal with any incident should it arise."
