Smoking ban in Holland works well - only few warnings given
published: Monday, July 14 2008, 6:06PM

The VWA (the Dutch government agency that enforces the smoking ban) reports that the large majority of pubs, restaurants etc. live up to the rules.

About 96% of the inspections were without problems.
On the first 1,000 inspections, 34 warnings have been issued to venue owners. In a lot of case the smoking ban is not properly advertised in the building. This can lead to confusion with guests, especially guests visiting from abroad. In other cases people were found smoking.

One in eight dedicated smoking rooms were not made according to the rules (not properly closed off from the rest of the building). Of the 1,000 businesses, 116 had made a special smoking room.

The smoking ban applies in the Netherlands from July 1.

The venue owner is responsible for enforcing the smoking ban in his building, not the guest. First time offenders get a warning, after that fines are given of EUR 300,- or more.

Dream on greenleaf420. The EU has mandated the new tobacco smoking rules and most of Europe has tobacco smoking bans now or soon will.

and we never will, but with all the contributions made by the big tabbaco
companies to politicians you would figure politicians wouldnt shoot themselves in the foot like that, but they did
illinois adopted the smoking ban january 1, 2008 and allthough it sucks everyone has pretty much gotten used to it by now. its not so bad in the summer but in the winter everyone hates it and no one goes the the bars which also doesnt help our failing economy.

Well having been back in the UK for a week I have to say
The Dutch approach to the smoking issue works a lot better than the UK's
Bars / restaurants with dedicated smoking areas as apposed to a blanket "Not Inside" policy
Even on the railways they have got it sussed with the 3 meter area around the smoking pole on the platform
Where as in the UK its again a blanket not on railway premises policy

And then there was the coffeeeshop (not in Amsterdam) when asked about the tobacco policy the bud tender told us
"As long as you don't smoke blow at the bar, you can smoke anywhere. and no I don't understand it either"

The Dutch are such a civilised race
