First trip! 12-15th Aug.

Post by Hanzi »

My partner and i will be heading over there for a few days (12th-15th Aug).

Really looking forward to it. Been trying to plan it for a couple of years and have finnaly booked everything after deciding on a whim (and pretty stoned) that we would "just go". So we are!

Travelling on the train/overnight ferry combo from London.

Staying in Hotel Amigo. Cheapest place we could get at such short notice. Looks alright from reviews etc. Still we dont plan to be spending much time there!

Struggling to oriantate (sorry my spelling is shite) where we are staying with good places to be/Vondelpark/decent coffee shops etc. Anyone who can help with that would be greatly appriciated. :)

Well maybe we will see some of you out there.

Peace

x

You are on the west side of Artis ( The Amsterdam Zoo ). het Ballonnetje will be nearby.

For all first timers I suggest S G Collins excellent site:
How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam

Do a little pre shopping at the Coffee Menus page, just click below.

Enjoy

Thanks for that FlyByNite :)

The links are useful.

We are thinking of visiting Pink Floyd, Mellow Yellow, Amnesia and Grey Area for starters. Based on the reviews on here.

Any others we should check out?

Also does anyone know if the distance from Hotel Amigo (near Artis Zoo) to the center is walkable or should we make use of the trams?

Cheers!

Just by looking on google maps I would guess that it would take myself 20 minutes to walk from the hotel to Dam Square, so depending on much you like walking then I might buy a tram pass for a couple of days to give the feet a rest.

Looks like you have a tram track on your road which would be handy too.

As for coffeeshops then I would add Stix and Katsu for a couple of really nice experiences and with good smoke too.

Not far from Red Light

Post by theman »

Not far from the Red Light district there are tons of coffee shops.
In fact our hotel was on the outskirts of the red light. i remember visiting 'Highway" a few times because it wasnt far from the hotel.
The best 'vibe' I got was from Dankring (sp?). People were telling me the 'bulldog' is commercialized..but to be honest, ALL THE SHOPS were pretty killer. I only ran into one shop that seem to not want my money.

Keep a written log on where you visit because as you see, I can't remember all the names.

Enjoy! I dream about it everyday and look forward to my return.

 its "Dampkring"

and all the shops being killer is relative. coming from the US or UK we think being able to buy buds in a reg store is great and tend to overlook details. but comparing c/s to each other there def are "great" "good" and "crappy" ones
If it wasnt for the brits, ID BE DUTCH RIGHT NOW
