Any input from the scots out there?

Post by Guy Incognito »

Figured I'd post my itinerary for the scotland leg of my cross europe journey to see if there was anything I missed or should do along the way.

Tuesday (Aug 5): Meet up in Edinburgh early afternoon. Cab it down to Rosslyn Chapel (7 miles from Edinburgh) (open until 6 PM -- Apparently the outside of the chapel is undergoing renovation and is covered by a metal canopy, but as they say, its what's inside that counts). Other sites to try to hit: Walk around the old town, climb arthur's seat in mid-afternoon (sunset is not until late -- after 9 PM) Recommended for dinner: Deacon Brodies Tavern (435 Lawnmarket). What's the name of the place you booked for the nights of the 5th and 9th?

Wednesday (Aug 6): Wake up early (7 AM or so). Pick up car at 8 AM at Waverly Station (opening time is 8 AM). Drive from Edinburgh to Stirling (roughly 1 hour). Morning at Stirling Castle and Castle surroundings (including Wallace Monument) Lunch in Stirling. Leave Stirling early PM and drive, via Loch Lomond ("I'll take the high road, and you take the low road") and the Trossachs to Glencoe. Spend the night in Glencoe at the Clachaig Inn. Enjoy their fine scotch collection.

Thursday (Aug 7): Wake up early-ish AM (7:30 or 8:00). Go hiking in Glencoe. If we want, we can drive around the area and visit Eilean Donan castle (near Dornie) -- roughly 1.5 hour drive (google it -- looks amazing -- but we can decide if its worth the drive -- may have to feel out the locals on it). Spend the night in Glencoe at the Clachaig Inn. Enjoy more of their fine scotch collection.

Friday (Aug 8): Wake up early-ish AM (7:30 or 8:00). Option 1: hiking in Glencoe and surroundings (then drive 1 hr north to Fort Augustus for views of Loch Ness). Option 2: Drive 1 hr north to Fort Augustus and do a hike in the vicinity of Lochness. Recommended Drive is via the B862. Also nearby is Urquhart Castle (which looks awesome -- google it). Drive from Loch Ness area to Ballater (roughly 2.5 hours). Overnight at Green Inn in Ballater.

Saturday (Aug 9): Wake up early-ish (7:30 or so). Morning hike in vicinity of Ballater/Braemar. Early Lunch, then drive from Ballater/Braemar to Dunottar Castle (google it - looks amazing). Drive is roughly 1 hour (figure we will arrive around 1 PM). Walk around the castle. Leave around 4 PM. Drive to St. Andrews (1.5 hours). Walk around St. Andrews (dinner in St. Andrews?). Leave St. Andrews around 7:30, return to Edinburgh (1.5 hours). We should get back around 9 PM or so.

Sounds like a solid plan my friend. Only a couple of parts id advise on are when your cabbing it from edinburgh to roslyn it will be very expensive id save at least £30 each way for that. If your planning to drive from stirling to glencoe, via loch lomond, be prepared for a long drive 4 or 5 hours. i would use the A82 road on the west side of loch lomond to drive to glencoe. I'm sure you guys will have it all figured out after asking a few locals about the distances and such.

Have a blast m8 !!

I have nowt to add, you seem well prepared, thats a well planned trip. Maybe a trip to the Castle, Edinburgh castle is spectacular, as is Stirling castle in fact.
BE PREPERED FOR ROADWORKS!!! Edinburgh is currently a costruction site because thier installing a Tram System. I choose only to drive to my work as I work at night. any other time I walk (or bus it).

Enjoy yourself, and I welcome you to Bonnie Scotland
